I was bricking myself too before mine. Prep was unpleasant. Feeling hot stinging water coming out your bum while you spend the night on the loo is not exactly fun. The actual event though was so easy and I had no sedation or pain relief.
Details: My consultant explained the procedure and said about 1 in 7 of his patients have medication and it was up to me. I could have it before or at any time during if I wanted and I could stop the whole thing if I wanted. Result I felt very confident and relaxed. I went for starting without. The only med was a drug to relax my colon muscles. I watched the whole thing on two TVs (one each side of the trolly. I moved myself as requested, I asked questions, I was stunned at the pictures and was excited when he put the probe into the ilium at the end. It did not hurt, even when I had polyps removed and biopsies taken. To be honest there wasn't even that much sensation. The finger/probe up the *** felf OK/interesting then there were maybe 3 or 4 times I felt something like a strong gurgle feeling. Absolutely nothing like as bad as a wind/colic pain. I'm not being brave here its true. A good practitioner and a relaxed patient = easy time. I just wish more doctors offered the approach of my consultant. So many more patients would see it is usually painless, people would stop believing its so terrible they have to make you forget, and more people would have this life saving check. OK it could take 5 minutes more as the doctor would have to talk to each patient and maybe, occasionally stop or pause to give medication, but it would be worth it if you think of the stress and lives saved.

Set aside your fear and anxiety.
The fact is a colonoscopy is one of the most important screening tests we humans can take in order to detect early colon cancer that can be easily treatable.
I won't sugarcoat the fact that it's a bit uncomfortable and the preparations (fasting, colon cleansing prep, etc) are not the most fun, but once you have it done it's not something you'll have to think about for another 10-15 years or so.
Sometimes we need to do things we don't like, and it's times like this you should just accept the fact that you're going to do it, put yourself in auto-pilot, follow the directions you'll receive to prep for the exam, and just do it and get it over with.
Do you remember when Katie Couric was with the Today show and she had the procedure done and it was shown to the world on the show? How nervous and scared do you think she was?
But, she did it.

yes I have had quite a few throughout my life, but always with general anaysthetic, but know some men that have had sedation with mild discomfort. But believe me you are doing the right thing.

I had one a few years back, but was completely knocked out. Your rump feels a bit weird and kind of sore for a day or two afterwards, but that's all.

As a man I would have a problem having something stuck in my ***, sedated or not. thats why I use Dr, Natura. its taken orally. Plus the colonoscopy only gets the decending colon, not the entire colon.
