I am looking for a utopia in NZ where the ski lifts operate from the beach with perfect waves, taking you to a snow covered mountain. Any clues?

hmmm not sure about quite that image, but because N.Z is so small you could be skiing on Mount Ruapehu one day and then surfing in Raglan the next without too much trouble.

Ha! I am soo qualified to answer this question!! I used to live in Napier, which is in Hawkes Bay in the North Island. Beautiful setting with lots of surfing beaches within 20 mins drive and also the Mahia peninsula not far away which is surfing heaven, and the town of Gisborne an hour away, another surfing heaven. Then you have the ski fields of North Island, Mount Ruapehu (skifields Whakapapa and Turoa so you can look em up) 2 hours drive away.

We used to have season ski passes, surf one day and ski the next. Came back to the UK for family, would NEVER have left otherwise and dream of going back permanently every day. Good luck!

It's not quite that close, but if you visit Christchurch the beaches are 15 minutes and one of our major ski fields is about an hour and quarter.

The closet you would get (I think) is Kaikoura, but the ski field is still about 45mins away from the surf
