I went and donated blood today....everything was cool and I saw everything being opened in front of me..everything except one syringe which was used to inject saline into my arm. This syringe was on the table next to me and it wasnt wrapped. what is the possibility that the nurse used a reused syringe on me...there was no way to tell if the syringe was new or not because it was lying there...so the chances of a mistake happening is pretty high ! I am quite nervous now....any thoughts?

i think that there really shouldn't be anything to worry about, nurses are trained and they certainly know the consequences of a used syringe, the chances of a mistake is low but hey we're all human and mistakes do happen. but really the chances of you contracting something if there was a mistake is even lower. if you're really that worried the only way to know for sure is to get yourself checked out.

I am a Registered Nurse and please let me put your mind at ease. Reusing syringes is simply something that a trained nurse would absolutely not do!! It would be almost impossible to accidentally reuse a syringe as it becomes second nature to dispose of them after use. Furthermore we would NEVER fill a syringe to use that we had not just opened new out of a packet. I understand your concern because you didn't actually see the nurse do this but please be reassured that it is not a mistake that nurses make. I am not saying that nurses are perfect and never make a mistake but I cannot imagine any nurse that I have worked with in my 9 years as a registered nurse making that particular mistake, it just does not happen!!!
If you are still concerned please go back to the place where you donated the blood or give them a ring and explain your concern. I am sure they will not be offended but you might feel a lot better after talking to the nurse who treated you. Next time please speak up at the time, it would be much better for you to do that than come away and not know. Nurses in general tend to be very approachable and don't mind questions.
I hope this helps!

In this day and age, the re-use of syringes is non-existant. The nurse would have had to unwrap the needle before had to fill it with saline. You were probably not looking, or she prepared it a little earlier than the others.

Don't stress. Blood donation nurses are normal nurses who know what they are doing. If you are still highly concerned, in a few weeks visit your GP for a blood screen. The few weeks is how long it will take for HIV to show up in your blood. But I don't feel this to be necessary.

Why didn't you ask there and then?! I don't want to sound mean, but if it is something to do with your health, you should be able to talk up for yourself...

..Anyway its done now, and I honestly doubt if they would re-use the syringe.
