I went and donated blood today....everything was cool and I saw everything being opened in front of me..everything except one syringe which was used to inject saline into my arm. This syringe was on the table next to me and it wasnt wrapped. what is the possibility that the nurse used a reused syringe on me...there was no way to tell if the syringe was new or not because it was lying there...so the chances of a mistake happening is pretty high ! I am quite nervous now....any thoughts?

The chances are about a zillion to 1. Most likely, they use pre-filled saline syringes. One to a customer.

Nobody knows more about blood safety than the Red Cross.

A syringe of any type should never be opened until just before being used. The previous answer was very good. I get a sense/feeling that someone got in a hurry and opened it just to try to save themselves a little time. However, that's not sanitary nor does it follow health care protocol. I doubt it was a used needle, but, as you said, there's no way to prove that with it already lying there already opened. Whoever did that needs to get a refresher course on giving injections. I am a former RN just to give you a little more confidence in this answer. But yes, I agree you need to have a talk with the top person at that donor facility.

I would recommend that you go back to the facility, tell them your concerns and get their response.
