As a last name. Any help would be much appreciated, for example of you have or know of anyone who has the same name.
If by a strange chance anyone knows this guy, he works for Midlothian Council, and I don't want to offend him by getting his name wrong!

My buddy pronounces it 'hockey' - it's his surname too

It's an Irish name. A former Taóiseach* of Ireland was called Charles Haughey and the pronunciation of his name was a bit like 'hockey', but the 'ck' is a spirant - not a plosive, so it sounds like the the 'ch' in 'loch', or the noise you make when trying to clear a bit of food that has got stuck in your gullet.

I'm not sure whether it can also be a Scottish surname too. if it can, then, no doubt, it will have an alternative pronunciation. Anyway, I doubt that he will be offended, as it.s not at all obvious how to pronounce his name.

*{I think that 'Taóiseach' is the Irish equivalent of prime minister.}

I'd pronounce it hoff-ee but you could just ask him how to pronounce it, I'm sure he won't be offended by that.
He'd probably be pleased someone took the initiative to ask rather than just taking a guess like I'm sure many people will.

By following the rules I learned in English class, I would pronounce it Hauffy. But anyways, you won't offend him because people must get it wrong from time to time and he must realize that it is a rather difficult name to always get right...and at least it isn't Bohner ;)
