Thou Shalt not murder ??? which way is it ?
Thou Shalt not murder: BIBLE BIBLE SAYS

One of the Bible's 10 basic Pillars, the ten commandments, says: "Thou shalt not murder. (Exodus 20:13)." Yet, we see GOD Almighty supposedly also commanded the killing of every single breathing creature from humans and animals!

Kill everything that "breathes" from humans and animals!

Deuteronomy 20:16
However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.

Apparently, it is one of the Bible's foundations to mass-murder every single human and animal from the defeated enemy.

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ***.

Christianity is STILL a Violent religion. You'll get Christians telling you that the OT is not relevant any more. Christians accept the NT, Just look at the first answer you got.

However there 3 things that contradict that thinking.

One is that if christians are supposed to follow Jesus as a model, he never killed anyone - true - he only got angry and threw some furniture around and broke a few tables. Is that violence? Still not a good model to be following. The Dali LAma is a lot more peaceful than that.

Second, if the OT was really not important - why then is it
A - still part of the bible when it should have been removed centuries ago and
B - why do christians still quote from the OT. They quote from it all the time - but then so did Jesus.

Christians - you cannot have both ways. Either you accept the OT and follow its rules like Jesus did, or you reject it entirely and remove it from the bible. Stop quoting from it and stop lying when you tell us that God says in (and you mention an OT book) that we must do this, this and that, and then tell us that you only live by the NT.

and 3 - Christians have been killing for the last 2000 years in the name of religion. What makes you think they can stop now? They cant. Look at Bush. He's killing hundreds of people every day - Americans and Iraqis. Now he's gearing up to kill Iranians as well. And he claims God spoke to him, he goes to church so he must be a christian.

Christianity is a VIOLENT religion - always has been - always will be. Anyone - AND I means ANYONE - who says its is not, is a LIAR!!!

One major reason why I left.

Wow, messed up a bit are we?

#1. What did Jesus say about the 10 commandments? It would be good if you found that out.

Christianity is the belief in Jesus Christ.

#2. There was no Christianity until after Jesus died on the cross and resurrected. Appeard to thousands, walked the earth for 40 days, then ascended into heaven.

Ya can't place Christianity in the Old Testament.

Jesus brought us the New Covenant (promise) to His believers.

I wouldn't question God's authority if I were you. He had reasons for destroying people and cities, read the whole thing, you'll understand.

A believer understands because we have been given the gift by Jesus Christ of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit instructs and informs. If you are a nonbeliever, there is no chance in the world you can grasp this.

Jesus didn't come to bring peace to the world, He brings peace to us, His followers. And believe me, once you believe you ARE at peace. It's the most awesome thing you will ever experience in your life!

Keep the faith, baby.

Normally I would only answer the question and try not to comment about the other answers to a question, however this time I think some of the Christians lost the point of your question. Yes the OT God was a mass murdering jealous and petty God. Whereas the NT God seemed to jump to a kinder, gentler God, but that isn't the way the faith has gone. Have Christians already forgotten their bloody past because they don't want to see the evil they have wrought upon the world? The Abrahamic faiths (Hebrew, Christianity, and Muslim) were born of blood and seem to have a very hard time departing from this. Perhaps one day they will outgrow their hatred of everyone else but their track record suggests otherwise. How sad it is.

Blessed Be )O(

Taupo Gurl stole my answer!

Religions are only as peaceful as the followers!

I will also add, that to understand the New Testament, you must first understand the Old Testament, it is from the Old Testament that the basis of Christianity is formed, if the foundation is flawed, the building will collapse. It can not be attributed directly to christians, just as much as it can not be not attributed to Christians.
Personally I like Deuteronomy 12:23 where it says "The blood is the life"... awesome, reminds me of the old horror movies.

Christianity is Older than your religion! it has its bases in Judaism... which is in the times of the Pharaohs... you know, the kings whos gods you stole such as Isis to add to your alter and worship as if they were actually part of some whack out old days religion in england. SHHH!!! and by murders I bet your referring to the burning times... Note to the Unwiser: Apart from one record of an african american slave women being burnt, all others were christian, in america... as for europe, there is little records, but those that have been found, suggest the same.

It is supposed to be...
A lot of the Old Testament, was made meaningless by the son of Mary, such as Circumsion, that the Jews (other than those of Nazareth that followed him) rejected him as messiah.
I take an unbiassed stance, and say that its up to people how they translate that. Sex can be seen as an exchange and representation of love, as well as reproduction and life, whilst it can bring pain, suffering, emotional and mental anguish, when it is rape.
"Dancing with Serpants"... this was blown out of proportion by some nut cases in America, who actually danced with snakes, rather than seeing the metaphore.
They have set rules, save those you can, if you fail they are surely those of satan, such as me... regardless how much I am preached to, im still not christian.

Anton LeVay said "If a man smites thee on the cheek, smash him back on the other."... the hebrews were slaves, so why not f**k **** up a bit, its justice as long as its done equally.

Its not the religion that is evil, or violent, its the followers. A judgement on all those who follow is like saying all Germans are Nazi's.

The first answerer is correct, you won't find any of that in the New Testament.
The thing to remember with the Old Testament, though, is that those who were slaughtered were warned for a long time that their sin would get them killed. They were warned by prophets, and in some cases, by God Himself. And yet they continued to sin.
So, when Jews in the Old Testament were commanded to go and slaughter everyone, it wasn't "just because", it was as retribution.
Another thing to remember is that in the Old Testament, God actually spoke directly to people. In the New Testament, God didn't, but Jesus did. Now, people are guided either by their own foolish pride, or the Holy Spirit.
The Crusades, the Inquisition, and other witch-hunts were NOT an instrument of God. Those were of Satan.
Remember, when the Israelites went into Jericho, they slew every man, woman, and child (except Rahab the prostitute and her family), but were not allowed to take any treasure for themselves.
Archaeologists at the site of the ancient city of Jericho actually discovered jars of grain, which was as precious as gold in ancient days. But the Israelites were commanded by God to not take the grain, and except for one man (which they were all punished for), they didn't.

Pretty hard to blame Christians for the things in the Old Testament. These are the stories of Israel and the Jews. Nothing is very much more than history for Christians in the Old Testament. You will not find anything even remotely similar in the New Testament. Get it, Christians believe the New Testament!

The God of the old testament is an openly genocidal, pestilential, infanticidal, psychopathic jerk. But even in the new testament we find plenty of scriptural support for spousal and child abuse, murder and slavery.

The 10 commandments are for us to follow to have a good life. If you will stop to understand one thing, If you go against Israel, go against GOD and his princilpes then you invite destruction on your self. Go and commit Adultry and die of AIDS, Go and kill an innocent child and you should recieve the death penalty. Go and try to hurt my kids and I'll send you to Almighty GOD and he'll explain these very things to you.
