>drink a cup of chamomile tea before going to bed
>take a warm shower
>use any product (like lotion) with lavender oil --
it's well-known for its relaxing propeties
>eat a banana! it has serotonin, an amino acid which according
to my doctor, will help you fall asleep easily
>lessen up on the caffeine (coffee & colas)

Not being able to sleep can have many reasons. It is also age related, how older you become how less sleep you need and have.
mostly we can see 2 different sleep disorders, the most com mun is that you're not able to fall a sleep but as soon you do you sleep normally. A second sleeping problem is not be able to sustain your sleep what more uncommon.
The problem of falling a sleep have mostly to do with stress, unsolved problems or anxieties so that your brain keep turning around those those things and you keep active thinking.
it can be helped with in mild cases vit.B12 in more serious cases with a sedative.
An other very effective way is to use a relaxation recording to listen at when you go to sleep. This is the most healthy solution. because you got not to use any chemicals for it.
If you cannot find such a relaxation recording, I have one and feel free to email me and I will send it to you. My email is:

Shut down the caffeine and sugar before 6pm and try not to take any naps. Keep the TV on so you can watch that instead of listening to your thinking and anticipating about for the following day.

many things you could try like hot milk, yoga, hot bath, reading, anything to relax you really. If you have got things on your mind or are troubled try writing everything down before you go to sleep, in a weird way this works for me its like I've cleared my head on paper so I can relax more at bed time instead of having things racing around my head.

Yes, close your eyes and roll your eyeballs as high as they will go and hold them there for a few seconds, now do that several times or until you feel sleepy.
What your doing is imitating r.e.m. (rapid eye movement) which occures in your deepest sleeps. In doing that causes your body to react in a sleepy way. sweet dreams!
