i read the answers and they are right. a vegetable is anything grown under the ground ... say potatoes for example. but we also have the cucumber which is not grown under ground but is a vegetable ... i have also heard the the tomato is a fruit, but most fruits are sweet or sweet tasting. i still consider the tomato a veggie tho.

Technically, it is a fruit. Scientists categorize these things on the basis of the structure of the edible portion. Like an apple or a pear, a tomato has a fleshy outer portion with seeds inside. This is very different from a potato or lettuce.

It is a fruit according to scientist because it flower and grows as an apple with seeds on the inside and a fleshy skin on the outside. At one time tomatoes were known as "love apples".
