Get real- the dog will spew it's heart up for a day and be fine in the morning. A little bit of chocolate doesn't spell instant death for a dog- they eat loads of horrible things and live, otherwise they'd be extinct by now. Take no notice of the scaremongering and finger wagging moralising diatribes.

Hi Crystal,
I think your over-reacting a bit. My familey have had 4 dogs, 3 of them living over 10yrs., and my dad is also a dog trainer. If it was just a small box of chocolates it really doesnt matter, and who ever told you he would die is an idiot. Feeding dogs over a long period of time lots of amounts of chocolate can result in blood poisoning and damage the livier, it cant kill them. I think its just reacted on him like some foods do with us, give him a day or two im sure he'll be fine, i take it that as hes a puppy he's only small its just like a toddler scoffing down a box of chocolates their bound to be sick.
Good Luck, i hope you can update us on the situation, i hope he's better soon xx
All the best,
Cameron x

Look for a good, basic, dog first aid book. You need to learn to give first aid, and put together a basic first aid kit.
Your mate who told you your pup would die wasn't being very helpful, thats enough to make you panic but it doesn't tell you how to deal with it. Theres a couple of ways you can make a dog vomit, your vet will recommend one for the future; but its essential you know when not to do it as well! So its always best to ring the vet first for advice.
Chocolate contains theobrimine and most dogs lack the gene needed to digest it; so it can be lethal to them. Dark chocolate is the worst. If you google you'll find loads of info.
Pups are daft and will eat stuff thats not good for them. So make sure you've got all your electrical cables hidden, unplug stuff and turn the sockets off, put everything chewable out of his reach. Get him plenty of chew toys and don't let him wander around unless you're there to watch him.

If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate contact your Vet immediately! They can help you determine the the proper treatment for your pet.
It takes a fairly large amouth of theobromine (the toxic ingredient in chocolate) to cause a toxic reaction. You didn't state how large your puppy is and how much she had eaten or even what kind.
I'm guessing it was milk chocolate which contains the least amount of theobromine (only 44 mg per oz) For milk chocolate to be toxic, use the following scale of 1 oz per 1 pound of body weight. (so if your dog is 5 lbs she would have to eat 5 oz of milk chocolate to be toxic)
You said she was throwing up, check to see if her heart is beating faster than normal or if she's having any muscle tremors. The first 17.5 hours are when the toxin is the strongest, so you'll want to watch her closely.
Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. Make sure she has plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration.

Personally i don't think your puppy will die. My dogs have eaten chocolates stolen from the Christmas trees and then to top it all ate a whole box of chocolate biscuits as well. They never got sick but i was not a happy bunny. All my chocolates in their tummy's. I used to give my dogs chocolates all the time they are still alive but then i did not know that they were bad for dogs. So that has stopped. But i don't think your pup is in danger. If it worries you too much take him to the vet. Take care :))

First off, Ignore the people screaming that your dog will die, she won't.
Secondly, yesy chocolate is toxic to dogs but it is a cumulative thing. the brain cannot process the chemical so it stores it. A build up over time is what causes death. i would reccomend storing your chocolate in the refridgerator (ice box, whatever you call it) in the future. Cinnamon is much more immediately toxic to dogs (it has an effect similar to the 1960's illegal drug LSD) so as long as they were not cinnamon coated chocolates, she will be fine. I would reccommend giving her some milk though. Milk slows down the absorption of poisions so she will not get as sick from it.

Hope your puppy's fine. Don't feel bad. I got a chocoholic yorkie too. Is it yorkies? Caught her only yesterday running up the stairs with a flake bar she somehow pilfered from right beside me without me even noticing she was in the room. I can't eat chocolate with her in the room cos she cries so much. She's otherwise perfectly behaved. Also she HATES doggy chocolate so no good trying to distract her with that. Anyone know a good substitute?

My Boxer Dog Albert had been having fits (which we now know were to do with his cancer - which hes now fully recovered from!) but at the time the vet thought it was low blood sugar, she is actually the one that suggested feed him a wee bit of chocolate now and again - ignore the people that were saying your dog was going to die, total rubbish! And it certainly was not your fault he ate your chocolates! My boxer dog always has the last lick of my chocolate yogurt and a piece of chocolate bar - and he is extremely healthy for an 8year old!
Please don't worry! Everything will be perfectly fine!

I just dont understand the fuss. my firstwo dogs lived to sixteen,my two dogs now are 15 and 7.They eat chocs, maybe 1 or 2 a week. Cancer killed my dogs. Perhaps our energy should be put into a worldwide cure for that merciless disease? Everything in moderation. Thats cool.Dont think vets would put out all these warnings if we werent lining their pockets. My vet feeds her dog the occasional choc

she'll probs be ok, especially if she has been vomitting, theres not really a lot that the vets can do. just watch her really carefully, and tell the vet if she starts to act out of character. i hope she's ok, good luck to both of you.
i kno of a yorkie tht ate a full box - the big one - of celebrations, and he was fine, best of luck

Keep the dog vomiting make sure its stomach is completely purged give lots of water. 4 or 5 pieces is not enough to kill the dog i shouldn't think but she will be feeling sorry for herself for a few days. If you think she has not purged the chocolate from her system you can ask the vet to induce a purge for her not pleasant for the dog but still better than her being ill
