I play on:
Pokerstars
ultimate bet
Full tilt
Party Poker
Full Tilt, Party Poker, and Ultimate bet are great places to start. Poker Stars tends to be a bit off on betting.

The fact that PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker still allow US players makes them by far the best sites - even if you don't live in the US. They have huge player populations and far more bad players than any other site (you WANT to play against bad players). PokerStars is my favorite site by far... It has great software with resizable windows (the only site I know of that does this, and it is VERY nice).
One complaint about the PokerStars software is that their chat window is too small - I like to set it so the dealer says every action in the chat window so I can easily look back at what's happened in a hand, but with the tiny chat window it makes for a lot of scrolling (plus the chat dissapears after a short amount of time). The only other complaint I have about PokerStars is they have no visual hand history option like Absolute Poker or Full Tilt Poker - it's nice to be able to see what people mucked with one click of the mouse rather than needing to scroll down to the bottom of a page of text to find out what was mucked.
These complaints are rather minor ones - and the positives of PokerStars far outweigh these couple negatives. PokerStars has over 10,000 cash game players at peak hours, and far more than that playing in tournaments all day long. The sit n go tournaments on PokerStars are great, and the "rake" for the sit n go's is about half what you would pay on Absolute Poker. The tournament structure is also better in my opinion. The blinds go up slower than at other sites, and this benifits solid players over the crap shoots that many sit n go's from other sites devolve into. Besides the sit n go's, PokerStars has more big tournaments than any other site - and the blind structure for big tournaments is just as good.
All in all, I'd recommend PokerStars over any other site. They have a game selection that is better than any site other than Ultimate Bet, the have the largest player population of any poker room (internet or real casino), they have more tournaments than any site, and they have lower fees than other sites.
If you don't like PokerStars I suggest four other sites (in this order)...
Full Tilt Poker
Party Poker (only if you don't live in the USA)
Ultimate Bet
Absolute Poker
Good luck!

There are many great ones out there. I've been using Poker Stars for four years now, and also enjoy Full Tilt from time to time.
The link has some reviews and links to some of the best ones that still accept American players.
