If you sincerely care about them, give them a few days to get over the shock amongst THEIR family, but then, I think it is important that you support them. The more familiar you are with the people involved, the less time you need to wait before becoming involved. If you know them well, there is no reason to wait at all. You can go, and tell them that you are sorry for their loss...
offer your support etc. This is just basic decency, do not ever be afraid to do what you know to be right. Sometimes it is good to just be there for them, give them someone to talk to, let them know that they are not alone. Everyone wants this. Bring something nice to eat, this is always appropriate. Spend some time.

When my dad died my family came together right away, and the support I felt was immense. I don't see any point in waiting. They will never need you like they need you right now.
What to say? There is nothing that needs to be said. Your presence alone speaks for you. Go with your gut.

In my community, we visit immediately, take food, send cards, ect...When someone suffers a loss, they need to talk and they need someone to listen and just be there.
