You might try letting him get out of the box before you try to change it.

Your cat may be responding that way due to the dust from the litter. Though it is rare, some cats can contract fatal lung problems due to the dust. If your cat continues this behavior after each and ever cleaning, then it's strongly recommended that you change to an alternative litter such as Yesterday's News brand. There is more than one brand, but the main point is to use a natural biodegradable litter.

These litters often consist of a process using recycled newspaper as an alternative to standard litter. It's healthier for the cat as well as you. You can find more information about this kind of litter here. http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441775660&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302033738&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023690&bmUID=1171532985724&itemNo=0&In=Cat&N=2033738+4294966684&Ne=2

Other brands that provide the same quality is Feline Pine and ExquisiCat Pine litter.

Not only is it better for your cat's lungs, but during any post-operative care dealing with their feet, it provides a softer surface and causes less infections as well as reducing tracking. Overall, it's a better, safer, cleaner and healthier choice.

I don't understand this. Why would you changing the litterbox cause your cat to choke?
