choke collars are not inhumane if they are used the right way. please do not use a harness because it will teach the dog to pull. using a rolled leather collar is ok i have used one on two of my shelties. if you are going to show the dog in obedience shows you can not use a harness only buckle or choke chains. if the choke collars are put on the right way they do not choke the dog and used the right way.

I don't like the choke collars, but I have had puppies that I found the choke or pinch collar made them easier to control until they learned proper leash etiquette. I have found with my "fast learners" that I don't need to use them. Start out with a regular collar or a harness to see how he reacts to that before using the choke or pinch collar.
I personally have found that a harness works better when beginning leash training than a regular collar. It gives me more control and when/if the puppy pulls, the pressure is distributed through it's chest rather than around it's neck. Most of my larger breed puppies (I currently have an American Bulldog) take to the harness fairly easily and my pup wears hers all the time now.

OK the name chock collar tend to make people thing bad thoughts incorrectly on the collar which is why the name slip collar is comming in vouge. Actually the slide of the collar is an enhanced communication device and used correctly will NEVER cut off a dogs wind. It is the traditional collar for presision obedience training just as the double bridle is traditional for presision dressage in horses. No my belief is that as no one bit is right for all purposes for all horses, no one collar is correct for all dogs for all reasons. two of my obedience dogs work on buckle collars (I go nuts trying to communacate with them on chokes), one can hear me much better on a slip (when I switched to the slip it was a major improvement) For a small pup that you only want to walk down the road a buckle is fine if you dislike the slip- but remeber to tighten it up enough it doesnt come over his head!

Again I would be anti collar and pro harness.I do not believe in choking any animal-still less one of my own.
A harness distributes strain on the dog to its shoulders and body and gives you as much if not more control over your dog.
It will probably take a day or so for the dog to get used to it but then there is no difference to them wearing one and say yourself wearing a watch.
I'm delighted to see so many posters are doing this and I hope that the more of us that use harnesses the more the idea will catch on with other owners

No, it isn't necessary. You have the right idea, you are training your dog already and I agree with you on the choke collar. With you approach the buckle collar will work fine.

never use a choke (strangle collar) on ANY DOG.. they are inhumane..... try using a rolled leather buckle collar,, or if you need more control,, try a prong collar ( yes these look barbaric but they are NOT) there is a "dead ring in the links thereby prohibiting the collar from ever restricting airflow or damaging the trachea... try it on your own arm,,,

A ideal outfitted step-in harness. it will be functional ward off them from pulling too (Badly outfitted harness can inspire them to tug.) A step-in harness is style of harness that works perfect for most breeds. Shar peis are such astonishing canine. :-)

No! It's not necessary to use a choke collar on any living creature! It's completely inhumane! Use positive reinforcement and if you're unable to handle your dog, seek help, and do some research.

i had a shar pei named brutus he was precious and my best friend. they are just the same as any other dog depending on raising. everyone gives them a bad rap but it just isn't so. brutus was the sweetest dog i ever had. i had a normal collar on him.
