The program that is always used for a certain task. For example, my default program to view files in .jpg format, such as digital photos, is Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.

Default means the automatic choice.
you may have other programs or software that could do similar jobs but one will be the normal one to open, you could choose others instead though

e.g if u wanted to search the Internet your default browser could be Internet explorer however if you have bt broadband your default could be bt broadband browser. you can pick your defaults on your computer so it will automatically use that software for your task.
