The US Coast Guard has some of the bravest men and women in the armed forces. Little do people realize that the Coast Guard is doing their duties and putting themselves at risk, even when there is no war. They conduct search and rescue operations that put Coast Guard personnel in danger on a daily basis. The Coast Guardsmen have saved endless thousands of people every year. They are honorable, they are brave, and deserve all the respect we can give to them!

The Coast Guard has changed to the Department of Homeland Security, not the Dept of Transportation.

That said, you can not place Coast Guard training next to Marine training and say they are "soft" just because physical fitness requirements are lower. It's comparing apples and oranges. Coast Guard personnel go out in the worst weather conditions to locate and rescue people in incredible danger or distress. They are a major component in the prevention of major drug shipments and illegal immigration to our country.

Anyone who considers the coast guard soft has their head up their *#&.

All branches should be respected, but yes, among the armed forces, they arent even considered military. They are not part of the Department of Defense. They are now part of the Department of Homeland Defense, they used to be Department of Transportation. They are a federal law enforcement agency in the eyes of the real military.

My Coast Guard friends are some of the most rugged rough & tough S.O.B.'s I've ever met. They also save more lives in a year than any other branch out there. A good many of them are ex marines. They're true Heroes each & every one of them.

Twenty years ago when I joined the Marines we all thought the Coasties were a bunch of boy scouts in boats. No respect whatsoever. But things have changed. With increased rescue ops and drug interdiction ops, they have a continuing real world mission. Yes, they do deserve respect.

Unfortunately though, the Coast Guard is considered part of the Department of Transportation, not a miltary branch

Yes, because they don't generally get assigned to war zones and hotspots in the world. Their primary duty is law enforcement on the waters, and search and rescue missions . All of their duties are primarily stateside.

A CG friend of mine told me of one of their solgans: "You have to go out, you just don't have to come back." Refers to ugly rescue situations, for which they seem to have the monopoly.
