Expensive ? Yes. Rare ? No.
Chocolate has been around for a long time in China. It just hasn't quite catch the fetish or popularity yet as in it's western counter parts. But this might soon change as the middle class is quickly gaining consumer power by the day. And I'm not looking forward to having the addition of even a small % of that 1.3 billion mouths falling in love with chocolate and begin snapping it up.

Imported chocolate bars might be quite expensive for the provincial lass but probably very available for the chic classed society. They might have cocoa powder available to make choco drinks out of. Although I am not sure if they do grow those cocoa nut trees in china.
"China is estimated to be home to 30 chocolate companies, which produce over 100 types of chocolate products.
However, per capita chocolate consumption in China is still much lower than the world's average.
Statistics indicate Chinese citizens annually consume less than 50 grams of chocolate per person.
While in Western Europe, the per capita chocolate consumption is 8 kilograms per year. "

Chocolate can be found everywhere in China, the trick is to stay away from the Chinese chocolate, for some reason it's greasy.
Dove is everywhere though, and it relatively inexpensive. You can also find Kit-Kats and M&Ms, some other American bars.
Be careful easting too much of it where they can see you though, they think chocolate is the reason Americans are fat, or at least that's what i've been told.

I stayed in Beijing, it's not rare but it's not like around here where there are vending machines all around and every newstand has a million varieties... You can find some at the newstands but if you want a good variety you should go to a candy store. I travelled to Pingyao Village, which is nearby to Beijing in Shanxi province, no chocolate to be found.

Nope, but be careful of fake chocolate. Trust me, if there are fake milk powder, there is fake chocolate. But, will it kill you, I dont think so.
But, in busy tourist areas, real chocolate can be expensive.
