Well, Besides the Quran!
The Celestine Prophecies By James Redfield.
It's not a true story, but his ideas and the Philosophy of it is fantastic! A wonderful read!
I was told it was made into a movie? Much better read I'm sure!

I'm a christian. I'm not sure about the best I've EVER read, but the best I've read within the past couple of years would be 'Star trek DS9: section 31'.
I assume this is a relevant answer, cos you didn't necessarily say it had to be a religious book. Anyway, you'd probably need to be a Trekkie to enjoy it.

The Celestine Prophecys. It's not about any religion it is about spirituality. It's for everyone.
A new spiritual awakening is occurring in human culture, an awakening brought about by a critical mass of individuals who experience their lives as a spiritual unfolding, a journey in which we are led forward by mysterious coincidences.

This is a hard call, but as far as most thought inspiring, I'll go with Consciousness Explained, by Daniel C. Dennett.
