Because 90% of the bible was written by MEN. And the other 10% just contradicts what 90% of it says.
Besides, when people use the bible to back up their ignorance/hatred (which is usually when I see it used most) it means the person who posted it doesn't have the ability to think for themselves.

I should think that is very powerful. The power to evoke such a negative response is nonetheless power, after all.

The main reason quoting a Bible passage in an answer (or a question, I suppose) gets such negative responses is that Christians tend to forget that it will not count as evidence, let alone proof, to a non-Christian. It's just another book, one more annoying than some others because it is constantly being shoved in our faces, but just a book. How much weight would you give an argument consisting of quotes from the sacred books of other religions?

If you want to convince others of the validity of the Bible, you can't use the Bible itself for the purpose. And since most Christians acknowledge that there are at least many APPARENT inconsistencies in the Bible, whether or not they have explanations available to smooth them over, you must see that internal consistency is not going to prove anything, either.

People are afraid, religion is a touchy subject for people.Fear of what the other person or persons might think of you if you proclaim your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. People always look at the negative rather than positive first, I know for me personally it before I entered a relationship with Jesus Christ I wanted nothing to do with anyone else who did or even hear about it. But I say keep doing it no matter how many thumbs down you get, I do it, if people are really looking for an answer to a question then they will look at all the facts and opinions and hopefully make the best decisions for themselves. As for me personally I think the Bible as the answer to every question that I will ever have in my entire life.

The Word of God is powerful. It will do it's work in every heart. It just depends upon what the condition of the heart is. The Word of God is like the Sun. The sun works differently upon different materials. The Sun will melt wax. Similarly, the Word of God will melt the heart of one who seriously wants to know God and it will bring him into a personal relationship with God. Hebrews 4:12 says "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two–edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart".
The Sun works differently upon mud. It will harden
mud. Similarly, The Word of God will harden a heart that doesn't want God in the direction that that heart seems to want to go as He did in the case of the Pharoah of Egypt(Exodus 9:12).
I said the Word of God is like the sun. Actually, the Word of God is the SON. John 1:1,14 says " In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God..........And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth".
As to why all the thumbs down? Part of the reason is because this forum has a lot of anti-religious bigots who hate God and hate religion and especially hate christians. Another reason was given by John the Apostle. He said in John 3:19 " And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world(speaking of Jesus), and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Well, usually bible passages are posted:

To prove that the bible was incorrect about something, which Christians don't like (thumbs down)

or...

To prove that the bible was correct about something, which others don't like (thumbs down).

Either way, you're going to make someone unhappy. So, rather than offer objective feedback, they simply pout like a child and blindly give thumbs down.

Cynical response taught by the media to break up social groups and families; to elicit individualism which creates larger markets for goods and service; which they sell billions of dollars of advertising space for each year.

Oh you mean like this one.

2 Timothy 4:2-4

2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

You don't honestly think that "thumbs down" really means anything, do you?

Is that going to be your excuse on Judgment Day?

"Gee God, I would have believed, but your Word just got too many thumbs down...."

As on who gives a thumbs down I would have to say the reason is that they try to back up their points with something I dont even think is true therefore it makes there answer moot and more often than not is Non Sequitor in the first place.

Hi Brendan,
God did say that His Word will accomplish the purpose for which it was intended.

Also Jesus said that for some he would be an offense.

Further His followers are not greater than Jesus. If Jesus is an offense then His followers would be also.
