The feather pattern looks like eyes--big eyes of a predator--very scary to threatening animals---the owl spreads the wings to display the 'EYES" ---scaring the enemy away. It is a natural defense mechanism to help the owl look bigger and meaner. The screech is also loud and scary.

no they don't have an extra set of eyes, but they do have 2 ar*eholes and a third nipple

poor thing will have to be extra careful where it sprays its deodorant if it does.ive never heard of this maybe its marking like with the peacock
