Unlike other industries (such as high fat foods companies, alcohol producers, etc) the tobacco industry is controlled by a very few, very rich companies that can afford to purchase government support. They are also rich enough that they can advertise against themselves (i.e. Truth commercials, Phillip-Morris's 'How to talk to your kids about not smoking'). So cigarettes are still sold, although they have more proven negative side effects for the user and for those around the user than almost any other product. Those people who say it's about choice and are happy cigarettes are still legal should think about why marijuana is illegal, despite the fact that it is not any more debilitating than alcohol and does not have the addictive or carcinogenic properties of tobacco.

Because the governments make BILLIONS of dollars per year in taxes on them! If smoking would be outlawed and cigarette production stopped, people would live longer, thereby putting an even greater strain on Social Security. All taxes would increase drastically.

I've asked this question here as well.

If i produced a food that contains 69 cancer causing chemicals do you think i'd get approval to distribute it ?

TAX and political suicide are the 2 reasons we still have ciggies.

Someone at the top needs to realise somethings are more important that thier self-protection.

And people shouldn't quote "freedom" and "rights". You don't have a right to take class A drugs, do you. They have been banned because they are dangerous, as have many foodstuffs.

Because there are millions of people who want to smoke and can invent a million reasons not to stop.

People will always do stupid things, the government know this and they can tax stupidity in this way.

same reason alcohol is allowed to be served (its a killer too) so is high fat foods. Its because its a persons choice, and they know what they are doing to them selves. I enjoy smoking, and I know the health risks, and I don't care. Its my choice to smoke, and I don't think anyone should tell me I can't
