The hindu concept of an avatar is an incarnation of the divine. Is it offensive that Yahoo! has taken this and turned it into a personalized icon? In a sense, it is an "incarnation" of your online self, but at the same time characterizing your icon as an avatar seems to be kind of extreme (since many of us don't live our lives on Yahoo!).

Are there enough Yahoo! addicts living via the site that you are flattered by the borrowing of this term or is it just crazy hyperbole that mischaracterizes the concept?

Nothing offending in that but feels little good that Yahoo! used this word which comes from Vedic Wisdom of India. I think the good point here is that it might work as a start for few persons to inquiring more about timeless wisdom of ancient India. I would encourage Yahoo! to include more and more words like this so that it leads to the benefit of whole mankind.

I dont think hindus feel offended. an avtar is an incarnation of any being, it can be that of a devine deity or of even one of the demon deitys so essentially its used like another word for "form" or guise.
It is always flattering for any language for its words to become universally acceptable! By the way I am a hindu.

I'm not a Hindu, but I have studied their religion and don't see why this would be offensive to them. Gee whiz, isn't there enough to complain about these days without trying to stir up something new for people to be offended by?

It's surely no worse than using the word "icon" (a picture of God or a saint) to mean any little picture on a computer?

the guy who said god is everything isnt exactly correct. brahman is everything, which depending on what monastic school of thought you follow/study/are concerned with it could be god or just the ultimate reality. god gets transcended as just an illusion if you follow the analysis of shankara.

im not hindu, so i dont know if they get mad or not.
