ok help me out people. the dates the army gave us for my husband's r&r leave (from iraq) was originally scheduled for march 13-april 2 (includes travel time). i fought and worked really hard at my job to get these days off, which i finally did, due to quite a bit of shift trading.
now the army tells my husband that they moved it up two days, so instead he reports for leave on the 11th. he seems to think that i shouldn't worry about me working the 11th or the 12th (i have the 13th and later off) because it will probably take that long to get home. he says it took two days to get over just to kuwaitt from the states, and when his brother came home for leave it took him three days to get back.
from your experience do you think i'd be ok? it is very important to me (and him obviously) that i don't work while he's home (i work super long days and come home dead tired). any input would be great. thank you!

You should be OK. If he isn't leaving Iraq until Mar 11, he shouldn't be home for 2-3 days. It depends on how quickly he can get flights from country to country. It took me 4 days to get to Iraq from the states so it just depends. So you should be off by then. Just be glad the leave didn't get pushed back more than just 2 days. Your work should be OK. It actually works out because if he didn't leave until the 13th, you would be off of work for a few days while he wasn't there. Now you can maximize your time off with him. I am leaving Iraq in March to go home as well and can't wait as I'm sure your husband can't. Enjoy your time with him and good luck with work. God Bless.

It would help if you told us what city you are in. If you are in a major city on the east coast, such as New York City or Washington, DC or Boston, the trip would be considerably shorter than if you were in, say, Wichita or Redding, CA.
It's only 14 hours non-stop from Kuwait to DC, for instance. But add a stop in Dubai and New York and it becomes a 28 hour flight. Plus there is the time change to calculate.
It would take at least a day, probably two to travel to where you are. But you might want to ask if you might be able to get the day off at the last minute. If not, you would probably only miss him by a couple of hours, and he probably would want to shower, sleep, etc anyway. So it should work out.

Hey, y'all, remember Operational security when posting stuff on the internet. Minor things like flight times, troop movements, etc, might not seem all that important, but they can add up. To answer your question, it generally takes about two days to get from the States to anywhere overseas on MilAir. I think that the date changes probably worked in your favor, because his R&R time doesn't get charged until he's boots on the ground in the states -- Everything should end up working out good, I think, if he's leaving country on the date you posted. Be sure to have a six pack waiting for him! :D

I can't remember how many days my husband took to get home, but just be prepared for it to change again, that's all I can say. You're lucky they told you the dates at all, they only gave us an estimate for security reasons. :( To be safe, I made all the possible dates available. If you can afford to do it, take off the 11th-2nd. Even if he doesn't show, you can clean house while you aren't working. :) Good luck and enjoy his leave. It goes by very quickly....

I bet his schedule looks something like this...

On the 11th, he'll get to BIAP about 0500. He'll stay there until about 1630 before he flies out to Kuwait. He'll leave Kuwait at about 0230 on the 12th, if he's lucky. It could be later than that. Best case, he lands in Atlanta on the 12th/13th and then to his home airport.

That's based on best case scenario from what everyone has done from here.

Don't worry about it and if you have to work a couple of days, it will be fine. One thing you never get over there is time alone. There is always someone around. You may want to give him one day alone just to do whatever he wants.. That was a great thing when I got back just quiet and aloneness.

First have him fax you a copy of his orders [showing his travel and leave dates]. take that to your employer. Inform them that [these are the days you will take off]. If they see his orders you shouldn't get any flack. If they do give you some go to HR officer [or whoever acts in a similar capacity] and bring it up through them.

Ed is 100% correct. He may just want a day to himself to decompress and unwind. Remember where he is coming from and what a change it is going to be for him to be home. You guys will be fine. BTW, Stephen was reported for harassment. Semper Fi and God bless you both.

I'm very sorry, & thank you for you guys' sacrifice shouldering a war on terror & working for peace. {hug}
I wish all people would honor your sacrifice & put their petty malices aside & not be closet terrorists, trying to be destructive in others lives like the terrorists, etc.

It will take him a while to get home, work til you can't and tell your boss you are out of here when he hits town.
