I have been given prescriptions for the following medications: Prednisone for swelling, Azythromax (antibiotic) and Vicodin for pain. I am having trouble sleeping right now, could one of the medications be the cause? Or is it because I slept so much yesterday? Will the V help me sleep?

For Lucy, tell your husband that there is very little pain involved in the surgery and that he should get it done!

Azithromycin does not cause insomnia. The most common side effect of Vicodin would be drowsiness; however, some people can have a paradoxical effect to opiates like Vicodin and would have a stimulant effect. I stress that this is a VERY rare occurrence in the general population. Please, do not take opiate pain medication to help you sleep. Call your MD and request one of the medications made specifically for sleep instead.

The most likely culprit among your medications would be Prednisone. There is about a 10% incidence rate of nervous system stimulation in the general population. This is somewhat related to the dose, which you don't specify. If your MD is starting you on a large dose and stepping it down, it will not be a problem soon enough.

Then again, your insomnia may not be drug related at all. You don't say how long ago your surgery was or how much you have been sleeping since the surgery. Do what you need to do to try to stay awake during the day, so that you will be able to sleep at night.

Sounds like my reaction to codeine (found in vicodin). I still use when needed.

There is a book that teaches about muscles, pain and referred pain anywhere in the body. The principle is that the muscles get knots called trigger points which make the muscles tight that then press on nerves. It teaches how to get them to release which gets rid of the pain.
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
I also use a chiropractor and massage therapist as needed.

Some medications work in different ways on different folks. . but Vicodin gives me the exact same symptoms. I was wide awake. . .pain free, but wide awake. If you aren't in alot of pain, try skipping the vicodin and take an over the counter pain med.

the PREDNISONE,CAN CAUSE you to fill wired..The vicodin does that to me..Makes my head spin with ideas....I hate vicodin..........That's the number 1 addicting pain pill.....Be careful...It also depends how many mg he gave you of the prednisone...If you can take them as early as you can,and sleep when you have a chance...
You are gonna feel so much better when you heal...If only I could get my husband to get one,,
