A whippoorwill is apart of the night jar family of birds, They are small nocturnal birds. I do Wildlife Rehab where I live and during the fall and winter months we get a ton of Common Poor Wills (same family of birds) The whole night jar family are interesting birds.
They are usually mistaken for "Baby Owls". While they do resemble an Owl, they could not be more different. Night jars are strict insectivores, they have a huge mouth and a very small beak, the inside of the mouth is extremely fleshy (almost looks swollen). When they fly they look like a moth. The interesting thing about these birds is they will go into what is called a torpor, which is kind of like a hibernation but not as drastic or as long. They will drop their body temps and thier heart beat which will force them to "sleep" . That is the main reason why our rehab group gets them. They will decide to fall into their torpor in driveways, parking lots, parks, and sidewalks. At that point they are easy to be picked up.

A whippoorwill is a type of bird; it is a member of the nightjar family, and is named after the sound of its call. The male is one of the few birds that sings at night; you might not see it (it can be very well-camouflaged), but you will definitely hear it. I found out the hard way when I went camping a few years ago, and one kept me up ALL night with its every-five-minute call!

"The Whip-poor-will or whippoorwill, Caprimulgus vociferus, is a medium-sized (22-27 cm) nightjar, a type of nocturnal bird...Adults have mottled plumage: the upperparts are grey, black and brown; the lower parts are grey and black. They have a very short bill and a black throat. Males have a white patch below the throat and white tips on the outer tail feathers; in the female, these parts are light brown."
