I have a golden retriever, he's 5 months old and is still not house trained. I can't let him into the house until he learns to pee outside. What do I do?

Dogs won't pee in their living quarters. If you never let him into the house, he's never going to learn that he mustn't do it because he won't consider the house as his home. How do expect him to learn?
Sorry, but you need to do some hard work. Bring him in & watch him like a hawk. Everytime it looks as if he's going to pee, take him outside and stay with him until he performs then praise him to the skies. If he does pee in the house, you need to remove every trace of urine or he'll keep using that spot. Use a biological cleaner. It's much harder to train an older puppy, but he will learn. Owning a puppy means you have to resign yourself to a few mistakes. Don't punish him if he does have an accident, it's not his fault that he doesn't know not to go in the house.

You don't describe the method used so far to teach him to go outside. If you add more detail we can help you.
Do you use a reward method - praising him and rewarding him when he goes in the right place?
You can't leave him unsupervised and loose in doors until he has learned where he should go. This means that he shouldn't be left alone for more than 2 hours because he will need to go wee.
You say that you can't let him in until he has learned to go outside - I'm not sure what you mean by this as if he is being kept outdoors then he can wee anywhere and he won't learn to control himself and hold to go outdoors.
5 months old is still pretty young and some dogs are not reliable until they are much older. Things are just too exciting! Persevere and you'll get there in the end.

Make a walking schedule that you can follow for a week or two straight. Walk the pup 4 times a day especially after feeding. Bring the pups favorite treat, praise right after the duty. Must be right after to get the point across that if it's done outside he will get a great reward. Try some thing you rarely give him but loves. I used pepperoni. If he does it inside just clean it up without scolding, the pup already forgot. If you catch him in the act tell him ''NO!'' and run him outside. Hope it helps.

You can buy training pads, and when your dog pees on the floor, dip his front paws in the pee then onto the pad and firmly show him he does it there. Leave the pad on the floor, clean the pee from the floor. He will eventually realise he is to pee on the pad then move the pad outside.

It will be easier for you soon, as spring is on its way, and you will be able to leave the door open for him.

Remember to give him lots of praise when he does what you ask.

Don't worry about it, he will soon be clean. A dog does'nt like to be dirty in his home.

He is probably just a little late in training, like children they become clean at different times. Don't worry, and he won't worry.

You can buy at most good pet stores things called puppy pads. They are about 15" square and is like a sheet of cotton wool. These pads have a scent on them which will draw the dog to it when he/she needs to pee or poop!
Just leave buy the back door and the puppy will get used to the fact that, that is where he/she needs to go to the toilet.
I used these for my own dogs and my family have also used them. They really are worth it.

Plus they're really cheap too!

Agree totally with the first answer. You need to praise and reward him when he pees outside. You also need to avoid accidents in the house so watch him the whole time and take him outside instantly if you think he is going to go to the toilet. The more rigorous you are with this, the quicker it will be to get him housetrained.

At the age of 2 months old, my dog learned to do it on the newspaper. I put the sheet where I wanted and said "yes, yes, yes" and when he did it in another place, I said "no, no, no" and took him to he paper. I only did it twice and he learned. Afther that he had a few accidents but the fault was mine, the door was closed and he couldn't go to the paper.
