In some individuals, a streptococcus pyogenes infection ("strep throat") can stimulate the body to produce antibodies that act against the heart (and joints, among other things). This is known as rheumatic fever, and is the reason antibiotics are prescribed for strep throat (as they seem to decrease the incidence of rheumatic fever...the sore throat goes away on its own regardless of antibiotics).

In someone old enough to be using the internet, sore throats are almost always due to viral infection and cannot cause rheumatic fever.

"krienztcruxtz" is incorrect -- it is not staphylococcal in origin.

"Yes" is correct in their description of the link between Group A streptococcal pharyngitis and rheumatic fever. However, rheumatic fever is not rheumatic heart disease, because rheumatic fever is NOT associated with heart valve damage. Chronic rheumatic heart disease is caused by the same streptococcal pharyngitis as rheumatic fever, but causes damage of the mitral valve (usually producing stenosis), and also commonly the aortic valve, as its primary manifestation. In contrast, acute rheumatic fever does NOT cause valvular damage and is instead manifest as fever, polyarthritis, pancarditis, erythema, etc. It is important to medically make this distinction because the 2 conditions are managed differently.

The sore throat (if streptococcal) can be cured with most penicillins, but if viral then not much can really be taken to help.

you should also check your normal environment
