Do I have to see a psychiatrist to be prescribed medication for ADD/ADHD? I imagine a psychiatrist would be able to better answer questions about the drugs according to symptoms, side effects, etc. but could a physician do this as well? Can I see a physician for a prescription?
It just takes so long to get an appointment with a psychiatrist. Would it really be that much better to wait for one?

Yes, any physician can prescribe ADD medication for you. Many physicians in general practice have experience with ADD medications. Pediatricians often prescribe these medications to children. Why didn't the doctor who diagnosed you prescribe the medication? Did he or she suggest you see a psychiatrist? If not, your family doctor should be able to help you with the medication.

Good luck to you.

I'm pretty sure you can go to a regular DR to get pretty much anything. The only problem is that they are less likely to prescribe something that would be best for you. With a Psychiatrist they actually ask questions and talk to you about whats going on. I don't know if you can for sure get them from your doctor, but either way I would suggest just working at getting an appointment with a psychiatrist and getting it from them.

Yes, you probaly could but it's hard because of the drug abuse of stimulants which most ADHD meds are. Are you able to get the doctor or clinic that diagnosed the ADD to send the records to the doctor office that you visit. If not the only meds the doctor would probably give is Stratera a non-stimulant ADHD medication.

doctors can prescribe those types of drugs, but you will have to go through a testing process to be sure you need them. start with the medical doctor and find out if he needs the psychiatric opinion. My nephew is ADHD and it is his doctor who prescribes for him, he has never seen a shrink.
