I'm pretty sure it was a Mayan belief but I could be wrong. I heard it on a Discovery Channel show and ever since that date has stuck in my head.

The Mayan calender ends on December 21 of the year 2012. It rperesents the top of a cycle and a cleansing in coaching for the commencing up of the subsequent cycle. I haven' t heard anyting approximately August 2008 having any importance to the Maya, or to to the different prophetic concept the two for that rely.

The Mayans did not believe in an end in August of 2012. The believed it would be the end of a cycle. Look into Mayan mysticism and you'll find that the truth is more complicated than End-Of-Worlders would like to think.

Yeah, 2012 I heard.

And I'm sure it will be the true year of the apocalypse. Just as everybody "knew" the world would end in 1999, 2000, 1000, 1666, 1975, 1982...

How long did you want them to make their calendar?
If Americans all died tomorrow and calenders were dug up a few thousand years from now, would those people say we predicted the world to end December 31 2007?
Their calendar ended 2012, it doesn't mean they predict the world to.
