If they are extra friendly I may put the extra change I get back in a tip jar, but they don't really serve you so I don't feel the usual 15 to 20 percent is earned and shouldn't be expected.

I never tip when I pick up food. Only when I was eating at the restaurant, I always tip 15%.

I do. We decided to leave about 10% on the table for the one who clears the table. We go to Home Town Buffet on a regular basis. There are so few that tip that you really stand out to the waitress when you do. They appreciate it and usually come up and say hello when we dine.

i do not tip if i order take out. tipping is appropriate in a few situations, but my personal opinion is that this "tipping fever" that has started to rage recently is getting way out of hand.

i tip when it is appropriate, and i tip VERY well. there are many situations where it is proper to tip, restaurants, delivery, personal services (salon, massage, etc) and i have no problem giving someone a 20-40% tip depending on the situation and quality of service. but now coffee drive-throughs have tips jar and chinese restaurants that don't even offer delivery (takeout only!!) have receipts that now request a tip be filled in on them. what's next?

it's simple economics. the salaries of workers are paid by the employer, and those figures and other costs are used to help determine what prices we pay for a service or product. if we are suddently expected to tip the workers on top of that, we are now basically being charged twice for our meal/service.

they say that eating out is a luxury, and if you don't tip your waitstaff because you don't have the money, then no, you shouldn't eat out. unfortunately employers are only required to pay waitstaff about $2-3 an hour because the position customarily is paid through tips from the guests. it is sad that this is what has happenned in our society, and that now instead of being rewarded with extra pocket money for giving outstanding service, waitstaff are at the mercy of the general public (who are often greedy, overly critical and merciless) for scrap change to collect a mediocre salary. if you eat out, you should make sure you have the money to give a decent tip. in that sense, eating out is a luxury.

but what point is it going to get to? when am i going to have to consider shopping for my groceries a "luxury" because the cashier and the bagger at the checkout want a tip on top of prices i am paying for my actual purchase?? when am i going to have to consider parking my car a "luxury" because the man at the ticketbooth for the parking lots want a tip on top of the fee they're already charging me to park my car on a slab of concrete for an hour??

it may be harsh, but i refuse to tip unless exemplary service is being performed or i am otherwise receiving a personal service that warrants a tip. i'm not going to tip the kid at the counter at Starbucks whose salary is already being paid with $5 12oz coffees. that's horsesh*t

No, in that case I would not usually tip. 14% gratuity is customary around most of North America; when a tip is applicable.

No. Why should I? There's no waiter to be tipped.
Do you tip the cook or the cashier in a conventional restaurant?
Why should you tip them here?

You hit the proverbial nail on the head. I'm the one doing the work; when I pick up food, nobody is "serving" me, so I don't tip.

No, there is no one to tip. Usually tips/gratuity are for the waitstaff. If there is no one waiting on you, then there is no one to tip.
