I will be teaching English in Egypt, but I've also been appointed to work as a first aider. I'm a pharmacy technician and CPR certified. However, this will be my first time working in first aid. what possible problems or ijuries should I expect to happen to students. Any advice of good techniques to aid in a more professional manner from my side? They also told me I'm just supposed to tell them what to do, not take any hands-on procedures. I think a first aider duty is more than that, like taking an action and offering remedies. Experienced members, please give me some advice. much appreciated!

Cuts, bruises, abrasions, bites (spiders, etc), sprains, headaches, students with cold or flu symptoms, nausea & vomiting would probably be around the most common problems or injuries you'll encounter. In hot weather expect problems like hyperthermia and in rather rare cases; serious injuries like broken bones, unconcioussness, asthma attacks, etc. I recommend you do get hands on and apply the first aid to the students - isn't that what being a first aider is all about?

You should expect to see a wide variety of injuries, anything from a cut to anything more serious. as a first aider you should expect to do a lot of hands on treatment. First aid, and CPR certification is designed to treat an injury and preform life saving measures, until more trained personnel arrive to take over the care of the injured person. Just remember never treat any injury or illness beyond what you have been trainer for. You can never get in trouble for helping someone, but you can get in trouble if you are certified and don't help someone in need.

I am an EMT in high school and know what your feeling. Most schools (at least the ones in the US) tend to underestimate the situation or blow it totally out of proportion. You defiantly need to be hands on and do what you think is right. Most school administrators have no knowledge what so ever about first aid. Also the parents tend to be a problem because nothing you do will make them happy, trust me. In a school you really won't be able to do much first aid, due to the lack of equipment and training. You can really expect to see any injury or illness, it surprising what will happen. Just remember stay calm, do whats best to the patient and do what you feel is right because in the end thats what is important.

As David is half correct. Helping can get you trouble if someone is looking for a lawsuit. However, get a first aid class at least so you have some basic skills. Also, make a list of supplies you will need to work with.
