Without towing a trailer and just driving the high teens maybe even 20 MPG. With a trailer pulling the maximum amount it can pull you may go down as far as 13-14 mpg. Consider the Gasoline engines in these large trucks get 17-18 empty and maybe 9-10 pulling a trailer the diesel is a good choice. These are highway numbers.

The 2004 or 2004.5 there different look on the valve cover and it will say 305 hp or 325 hp 600 series if 325hp the exhaust is 4" and plenty in size. Check and see if it has the aluminum intercooler or the plastic. If plastic than don't put more than a 65hp Modular or it will blow the cooler. We have 2 and the 05 blow the intercooler warranty covered it as yours is out. $1200. if it needs replacing. The mileage is OK as your dad hasn't off roaded or abused it.If U stay with the 100 hp mod the trans will hold up unless U rod it hard and nothing will hold up. We Have many upgrades and love the truck both were new. 425hp Ram/Air cat ran away.Ours are 3500 SWB Auto 4x4s.

A few things to keep in mind here. Mileage on the engine. If it's brand new it's going to do horrible on fuel. If it's got over 150,000 Miles it's going to almost twice as good. Driving habits also matter. 3.73 or 4.10 gears also matter. If it's a 4x4 that also counts. 4 dr or 2 dr. Manual or Auto.
Let's say it's a properly running 2wd, single cab, high miles, 3.73 gears with automatic transmission. You should see over 22 MPG on the highway.
If it's low miles, 4x4, 4.10 gears, manual and properly running you'll see 7-9 MPG in town.
Dodge Ram Cummins rule of thumb. If it does have high miles and it is running right. 20 MPG is possible in every 2500 or 3500 on the highway.
Mine is a 2wd, reg cab with 250,000 and does 30 MPG on the highway. Mine is far from stock as far as MPG is concerned. List of things I've done to mine to improve MPG.
Shift Kit
ATS low stall torque converter.
Edge comp box.
aFe air filter
5inch straight piped exhaust
re-adjusted valves
Amsoil fuel synthetic oil in everything.
Fleetguard Filters on everything.
A/C delete (lets intercooler breath)
195 F thermostat.
Cardboard in front of radiator, all year around.
truck cap.
Slightly lowered.
That's about all I can think about now, there is still room to work with in mine like...........
Injectors
FASS fuel pump
waterless coolant
cam
port and polish head.
gear venders overdrive unit behind stock trany.
relocate tranny cooler.
And there might be more than that as a well. But nothing is coming to mind.

I don't know about the Dodge, but the Ford Turbo diesel gets pretty good mileage. Approximately 10-14 in the city and 19 on the highway. Of course I know if you stick a highflow air intake and a highflow exhaust you can improve the mileage even more. That's if you don't drive faster due to the improved power.
