I would reccomend the Pontiac Fiero. IF you know which end of a wrench is which, you can tune these cars into very nimble little road racers. There are also V8 kits available for them.
As far as improvements over stock, I suggest placing a small bracket under the ECM to allow air passage.
The inherent problem that the Fiero had was the ECM soaking up the heat from the firewall, and frying the circuit board.
If you don't like the Fiero, then I suggest a late 60's to late 70's Fiat Spyder (2000)
I had a 1979 model, and it is still my most favorite car, even tho it is long gone!
