The Marine regimen has not changed much in the last fifty five years, although some of the training equipment, training technique, and job skills have changed. It isn't any tougher today then it was back then. The training is geared for infantrymen and the fact is, the Corps expects a lot out of it's infantrymen.

The Corps segregates men and women, so this way it need not drop it's standards to accommodate the weaker sex. The army has combined girls and boys together and that's too bad because now we have an army filled with more mediocrity than their numbers would indicate.

This combining policy doesn't make for a more disciplined, stronger, more competitive army, it makes for an infantry that's only as strong as it's weakest link.

The marines corps primary mission is to perform marine landings under hostile fire to gain a beachhead. They have special equipment and training to accomplish these difficult missions, which is outside the operational directive of the army.

The army while a capable fighting force usually arrives on land at a port of from the air and has generally heavier equipment designed for prolonged fighting on land. This is not to say once the army arrives the marines pull out.

So what it boils down to is different missions, different training.

Also be careful when assigning the name "primary" fighting force. The primary figthing force is any active duty personel regadless of their breanch of service. They are augmented as needed by the reserves and national guard.

We have multiple "primary fighting forces". The Army is only one. The Air Force is another, and the Marines and the Navy are others. Each one has different training, depending on their mission. Within the Army you have the Green Berets, whose taring is said to be tougher than the Marines. Also, in the Navy you have the Seals, also said to be tougher than the Marines. And there is an elite unit in the Air Force, again supposedly tougher than the marines. Also, within the Marines is another elite force. So take your pick. And incidentally, consider that there must be a reason for these special units or they wouldn't exist...and there must be a reason for their special training. Think about it.

If the Marines lightened up they wouldn't be the Marines. The fact that they are the toughest is what sets them apart. Every service has something that sets them apart that they can be uniquely proud of.

If you were in a situation where your life or your family was on the line, would you prefer someone who has merely sufficient training or someone who has been pushed beyond sufficient?

There's nothing wrong with a plain sundae, but every now and then you need a banana split.

Which do you want protecting you.Someone with "sufficient" training or the hardest basic course in the military? The Marines are tough because that is one of the things that makes us Marines. If everybody could get in, it wouldn't be the Corps. Semper Fi.

Would you rather have tough people fighting for your country or a bunch of lazy slackers fighting for your country?
