They don't fit the usual desperate to be popular mold so they accept the fact and choose the another mold and get an identity that fits them better, it has a sense of goofy irony about it.
As a Goth, you can rebel against the tanned-blonde global stereotype and dye your hair jet black and keep out of the sun and look pasty and make like you're disinterested in the beach etc, go to the movies and read books and listen to cultish bands...why not? it's just a style and it's not bad, it may be quite intellectual, it scares some people and to others like me it just looks kind of corny now but sweet.

They're just another subculture who like focusing on certain music and aesthetics. To me they're no better or worse than 1980s headbangers, 1970s punks, 1960s hippies, 1950s greasers, 1940s swing dancers, 1930s bootleggers, or 1920s flappers.
Actually, I'd say goths are better than hippies, because goths tend to mind their own business. I can't really say anything bad about a group who minds their own business.

Well, the goths did go around ransacking Europe for some time in the Dark Ages, but they did contribute a wonderful architecture. Thanks to them, flying buttresses were invented.
So I say good, er, gOoD.

Every one is responsible for their own actions. You can't just drop a blanket label on them anymore than christians or atheists. Besides, goth is a lifestyle, not a religion.
