My 8 month old pup keeps whining. It starts when my husband and I have gone out and when we come back, she starts to whine. We figured she was just upset about being left alone but she's been left alone before and it's never bothered her this much. We play with her, we take her outside, we feed her and give her water, we pet her, we've tried everything but she'll just whine and whine for like forty five minutes. What could be wrong with her?

She has separation anxiety. There are a few ways to approach this in training. One way is to crate train. Leave her in the crate while you are home. She will continue to whine for awhile, but will eventually catch on. Another way is to have a friend stay with her while you leave for a short period (drive around the block). While you are away have your puppy leashed with training collar & have friend give a tug & firm command when whining starts. Also, DO NOT make a big deal when you leave, be calm & give the command to sit & stay before leaving. Finally be sure your dog is walked at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes everyday, this is crucial! Seperation anxiety is a hard training process & takes time.

First of all check to make sure that she is not sick in anyway. A good sign of this is if her nose is warm and/or very dry. If she is not sick, then when you do have to leave and especially if you are using a crate, praise her for going into her crate, also give her something to do while she's in there, like a kong or some sort of toy she can play with. Then we you get home again praise her for being a good girl, then reward her good behavior with something whether it be a treat or a toy. Another thing that helps if you are crating her is to use a blanket that you don't care if it gets chewed, etc. and cover her cage when you are gone. Most dogs associate darkness with sleep time with will help her to feel more secure. Another thing i do with my dogs is when i am leaving i tell them i love them and we'll be back in a little bit. I'm not quite sure if that helps, but it seemed to have worked for both my dogs, they seemed to know then that i would be coming back soon and that it was o.k. that they were home alone.

whining is protesting.
take her outside and run her and play with her before you leave. make her tired.
Do not make a big deal out of leaving. Put her in her cage .
don't say good-by and don't get her out of her cage for 2 or 3 min when you come home. then let her out to pee-pee and run her some more.
She hasn't reacted too strongly before because she is a puppy and she has slept most of the time you were gone. She is awake more and ALONE now.
leave her cage facing the TV and leave the TV on.She won't feel quite as lonesome. Make sure she has a bone to chew and keep her calm...and busy!
as you are consistent with this,( this means ALL the time) she will know what to expect and her pathetic whining will diminish.
good luck ! mine is 8 mos also!
