I got my licence in 1963, so...
Get a car that runs cheap, with good mileage, no matter what. Get a car that is cheap with insurance, no matter what.
Whatever car you get, get a portable tire inflator, a tow strap, a shovel, an emergency survival kit (Make your own), extra backup warm clothing, etc., a 4 way tire iron (Rather than the one that comes with the car), read the whole manual all the way through, change the oil and filter religiously, and do all the other vehicle maintenance checks regularly - And you won't have any break downs at the wrong time nor place. (Except when you run out of gas with your girlfriend on a back road.)
My son gave us a 1997 Mazda and I have never loved nor enjoyed a car so much in my life, except when it snows, for the lowest part of the clearance is, of all things, the engine exhaust pipe.
Get standard trans to enjoy driving and truly control your car, not auto. Take driving lessons, for that can save your life, and lessen your insurance.
Have fun.

Go for the Civic!!!! Dress it up a little drive it have fun when you're tired of sell it to some younger kid as a Fast & Furious!!!! Seriously, I have a 98 Civic for about 4 years, it has @111,000 miles on it. I have had NO problems at all with it. It runs great, pretty quick for a little 4-banger, and gets on average 32 to 35 miles to the gallon.

go for the civic. a lot of people have recently complained about the mazda's build quality. as for the toyota, the civic has better mileage than the camry, and the build quality is nearly the same. the civic also costs a lot less than the camry. good luck.

For me, I think u should go for the Civic 2007, The exterior look of the car is futuristic. The interior is finish is execellent. It also give you good mileage. Beside that, the pick up is quite good. The resale value is great. I am sure u will not regret buying it.

Don't forget the Ford Focus Zx3 hatchback. It's a cute little car that in a 5 speed manual transmission will run like a bat out of hell. It's a good "tuner" car that there are a lot of extras for....The warranty is really good too.

Camry. My father drove to brands of Camry for more than 6 years. They had smooth rides, and nice exterior designs.
