Some dogs have accidents. How do I get mine not to? I have a 4 year old cocker spaniel that we just got from a family where the owner stayed home all day.

Remember the dog is 4 and she is used to wandering the house. I am going to keep her in the kitchen when we are at work.

If I do crate train and use the pads...how do they work and what do I do? Do I put the pad in the crate or on the floor?

Please organize someone to come in during the day and take your dog for a walk.
Apart from the'toilet'aspect he will, over time, suffer both physically and mentally with this regime and it just isn't fair on him

I have a 13 year old cocker and when I first got her we crate trained her and she did real good with it. Since this dog is older and can hold it longer I would just test her for a day of course make sure she doesn't get a lot of water right before you leave for work, take her out right before you leave and if she goes to the bathroom in the house while your gone I would start to crate her. But I would first try letting her roam because 9 hours is a long time for a dog to be in crate if not necessary.

Regardless if she is used to having free roam, you have the ability to crate train. Old dogs do learn new tricks :O). I just trained 2 pugs that are 5 & 9yrs. They constantly urinated while owner was at work. I used crate training. First time they had ever been crated. We have had 7 successful months. If you feel you cannot crate for whatever reasons, you may want to hire someone to come & walk in the afternoon.

I couldn't hold it for 9 hours so how could you expect a small animal to do it and don't lock the animal in a crate for that long either...partition off a room like the kitchen or bathroom with one of those baby gates and put newspaper on the floor

Start using crate as a place for him to go using a puppy pad or newspaper in only one area of the crate. Then slowly move that pad/paper everyday towards the door, eventually moving it right up to the door, so they know they have to go outside to do their business. Also, when your dog does do his business outside praise him for doing a good job. Tell him "good dog" or any other kind of praise you feel is good, then reward them for good behavior with a treat or toy. eventually he will associate going outside as a good thing and will wait until you let him out to do his business instead of in the house.

crate train him - its the best and works like a charm. DO a search on the net for crate training and youll come up with a wealth of information.
Its ok, that you just got him - its going to take some time for him to get used to being home alone, and you need to put him on a schedule.

First off can you hold it for 9 hours I think not Then why ask your dog to try and second a cocker is one of the worst to hose break but be realistic if you can't hold it for (9) hours then don't expect another living animal to do it

You can not train a dog to hold it for 9 hours this is to long and since this dog has not had to hold it that long ever you are fighting a losing battle you can expect pee or poop everyday I can't hold it for nine hours.

My god - 9 hours? PLEASE, use Wee Wee Pads from Walmart. They are hormonally scented to attract them to pee on the pad. I always have one down for my dog so he never has to worry about an accident. My last dog died from kidney problems involved in trying to hold it all day. Never again.
