i really dont care if roses are overdone. this tattoo is for me and not for others to judge by it. it has significant meanign to em as stated above and i could really care less about how many people have rose tattoos. once again its FOR ME! and i am certain i want this tattoo. im just not sure of the placement. i have been thinking more of the left shoulder blade or middle of the upper back but im not sure.

dont be ignorant please!

2007-02-14 19:25:05 · update #5

but if i got it on my side would it strech out alot? if i were to get pregnant???/ ever?? or gain alot of weight for some reason? i dont have alot of meat there but i can suck it up and take the pain. after all this thing is going to be on me for the ret of my life! =]

what about the side? if i were to get it on the side i would liek for it to be a larger tattoo.. instead of a medium one that would go on a shoulder blade of in the middle of my upper back. so many decisions!

I have a rose and two rose buds...for my two sons...on the top of my left butt sort of more to the side. you can see it in a bathing suit or when i wear low cut jeans. i have been pleased with that location.

I procured my first tattoo at the age of 18 and, being an art student at the time, design considerations were well in hand. To make a long story short, I wound up placing it on the inner side of my right ankle/lower leg and, in retrospect, this has turned out well.
Your skin WILL change as you get older (all those years down the track lol but inevitable nonetheless) and you may find that what looks pretty and feminine at 18 may not appear so at 30 or 40 or (o god scary) 50 when your skin's elasticity has changed and your beautifully drawn design sits with more and more drag every year. Also the colours will change, or perhaps fade and merge a little, or even worse - begin to bleed into your skin instead of appearing to sit on top. And before you say, "well i can just have it retouched when that starts to happen" think again! Having anybody but the original tattooist work on or over the original lines/shadings is a recipe for disaster. You will surely loose the finer qualities. Know where your tattooist will be in about twenty years from now lol?
.So what I am getting at is that the skin on the particular area I mentioned (lower leg/ankle) has aged comparatively well... it is still nice and taut and smooth and unblemished/unhairy. My ankles are nicely proportioned so having a picture there still seems quite pretty to me at 33. And if I ever do start to feel a little less young (god forbid) it isn't going to be in my face every time I check myself out. Why not start small and understated and if you still feel the urge in another year or two after that, you can always proceed with something more eyecatching and distinct and you will be way better informed to boot.
You have nothing but time and I wish you good things x

Do you have a tattoo or are you thinking about getting one? If not, does it matter? I have a small tattoo. It's in an area that does not usually require sunscreen. Haven't needed to touch it up yet (its 7 years old). Do you usually moistuize? Wear sunscreen, etc? Most is stuff we "should" be doing anyway. As far as touch ups go, it depends on the color. Black can fade a lot as can white for sure. Ask a tattoo artist. Most of all make sure you'll want a tattoo in 40 years.

I agree with the others that told you to think about possible sagging and you are right to consider distortion when you are pregnant! I knew a woman who had a tattoo on her shoulder and when she was older her skin was quite wrinkly (sun worshipper), you couldn't tell WHAT her tattoo was unless you stretched out her skin. The problem was, she didn't realize that no one could tell what it was.... That did not prevent me from getting one on my shoulder, however!

When I was pregnant for my son, my legs swelled horribly and I told everyone that my butterfly tattoo on my lower leg turned in to a bird. It, like my legs, went back to normal after I had my son!

I would say that you should think about the following when deciding:
Furture careers - can you cover this tattoo up so that business people can't see it? You may be on a board of directors some day, and all the others may have tattoos, too, but I am betting no one else will have easily visible ones, either!! Leg (depending on size) and shoulder make good areas - or the top of your foot! Easily covered by a shoe, partially covered up by stockings - a little different. Maybe a vine around that ankle incorporation all of the flowers you have chosen, and later in life you can add the birth flower of your children (should you have some).

Wow, I have gone on a lot to answer a simple question - sorry! Hope I help a little bit!

I have a tattoo on my upper back in the middle. its a heart with two nautical stars on the sides with a flame sort thing coming from the top, and a banner.. .Blah.. but i'd suggest the back. its a very big place and you can always add more to your floral arrangement. The side is very painful, the ribs are a very sensitive place. Many places will suggest not doing it for that reason. Especially if you do not have a lot of meat on your bones.
As for it being distorted i highly doubt it. If you wanted to go and get the outline and the shading first that would probably be best, in fact the tattoo artist will probably recommend that with such a large piece. You will probably have a few sittings for that big of a tattoo..

Goodluck! it sounds very gorgeous.

if by a "side" tattoo you mean ribcage then it hurts really bad. also, if the artist you want to get the tattoo done by is booked for a year i wouldn't have just part of the tattoo done (in black and grey) and then have it finished later, you may have to wait another whole year. i would have it all done at one time, especially since red roses are what you like. i would get a pretty picture of each flower that you want to get tattooed and let the artist use her artistic ability to make the best tattoo for you. usually artists are better at making an aesthetically pleasing tattoo than someone with no artistic ability. i find that the tattoos that people come up with on their own tend to look.... somehow "off" and not perfect. artists who are good at what they do are experienced in making perfect tattoos.

as for where you should get it? that is really something that you should take time to decide. if you still don't know by the time it's time to get your tattoo, the artist can put a stencil on multiple parts of your body and you can see just how big it will be and how it will look so you can make the best decision for yourself. good luck!

It's totally fine to ask for advice... getting a first tattoo is scary, and nobody should be beating you down. I asked around for almost a year before I got mine done, and I was getting advice and changing things right up to the last minute.

If you want to be gutsy, I'd suggest getting it on your stomach... It's easy enough to hide most of the time, and I think it would be beautiful. That being said, your stomach is a sensitive area, and if you changed your mind about having children, it would almost definitely stretch, unless you have some sort of miracle skin. For a less painful and equally pretty alternative, you could get it done between your shoulder blades. Just the way you described it, I think that you might want to keep it centered. Three flowers... it says centre to me...

those are my two (rather large) cents.
Good luck : )

My personal rules about tattoos.
Never get anyone's name on me that is not my child.
Never get a tattoo that is something I wouldn't show my mother or my child.
Never get a tattoo that is located somewhere that I wouldn't be comfortable showing a complete stranger. Because if someone finds out you have one, they will bug you to see it a lot of the time. I promise.
Remember that certain body parts tend to sag as you get older, so that tattoo on your breast when you are 20 is going to look a WHOLE lot different at 40 or 50. Same goes with that cute little tat next to your belly button BEFORE you have kids and after. It's going to stretch out and get all weird.
On to your question.....

You could get them in a ring or chain around your ankle, wrist or upper arm instead of a bouquet.. I've always liked how that looked around an ankle. It reminds me of the clover and daisy chains we used to make when I was a kid. There was a model that used to do a lot of work about 10 years ago that had a tatto like that, with all different flowers.
The only draw back to those is, wrists and ankles don't have a lot of muscle tissue, and they have a lot of nerve endings. That means it's going to hurt more there than if you did it around your upper arm.
The outlining hurts worse than anything else. I wouldn't get the outline done without shading and color. If you are going to someone good, it will go quickly.
Good luck.
Come up with a way to put the basic design where you think you want it for a while before you actually do it if you have any doubts. Trace it on with permanent ink to see if it's something you can live with. Better to do that with something that will wear off in a few days than to be stuck with a tat you aren't happy with.
You want to LOVE what you get. I've had a small rose on my ankle for 17 years. I still love it. It's exactly what I wanted at the time, and I'd wanted it for a long time when I got it.
I'm about to get three dolphins nose to tail in a circle to represent my 3 kids. I think I'm going to get it on the back of my calf, about 3 inches across for the whole thing.

I have a tatt on my side...if you go from the center of my lower back over to the right about 6 inches, that is where it's at. It is a different location, and I have been very happy with it. It doesn't stretch very much there, unless you put on ALOT of weight.

Yur design sounds beautiful. Roses are very common, but they are very pretty and can be classy! The motive behind your design is great! Good luck with your tattoo....I know, there are so many decisions!

it really depends on how visible you want your tattoo. Is it something that you want to be able to hide if needed or do you want it in plain sight? That's something to think about as well. Another factor you may want to think about is if you're going to have kids in the future. You may want to stay away from areas that have a tendency to stretch out if you gain weight (like if you're pregnant) - it can potentially distort your tattoo. It's this reason partially that back or lower back tattoos are often popular...the area does not change much even if the rest of your body does.

if its gonna have a lot of detail, I'd suggest your upper back like a shoulder. If not, you can have it done on the side of your hip and that way you can hide it with any pair of pants. No one will now you have it unless you show it.
