I have what appears to be a walking stick with either Chinese or Japanese characters on it. Can anyone help me identify them and translate them for me? You can find pictures of the characters at http://www.underforty.us/stick-all.jpg

The first stick says "Mt. Fuji Summit".
The second one says "Mt. Fuji, Okunomiya" (this is one of the shrines located on the mountain.)
The third one says "Mt. Fuji Entrance"
The fourth one says "Entrance to 7th Marker Station: Omiko (the second character is not clear)".
The fifth one says "Entrance to 6th Marker Station: Hoenzan, Kaiunso"
The sixth one says "In commemoration of mountain climbing: 5th Marker Station."

I hope this is good enough for you.

Yes, these sticks are sold to people who climb Mount Fuji. It's Japanese.

Each of the burnt engravings represent specific points on Mount Fuji. It is a way to show how far you have climbed!

For example, the third one (from the left) reads:
表口富士宮 - Mount Fuji Temple Front Door

If you notice on the last three there are numbers (2780 m, 2500 m, 2400 m). Each of these states the height in meters that you have climbed at that point.

I'm a Chinese.My English is not very well.But I'll try to describe.
But I think it was written in Japan. All the words are Chinese
It was used to help people climb the mountain called 富士(Fushi).Fushi is the most famous mountain in Japan.
the first one means "on the top of the Fushi mountain"
All of these were commemorated(纪念) that someone had climb on the mountain .
