I left him cause he needs to work on his drinking problem, if he finds help and changes, we might get back together...

If he asks for it back, he never really wanted to marry YOU specifically in the first place. The ring was a symbol for you to wear, not something for him to claim back at any time. I never asked my wife for the ring in the divorce, because I don't want to be reminded of my marriage. I link the ring to a particular woman, so I would never use an heirloom or recycle a ring. That's tacky and cheap.

You don't say how long you were engaged and what happened to make it come to an end. If he cheated on you then keep the ring and hock it. If you cheated or you both decided that it would be best to end it then do what is right and give it back. If he put you through a lot, I'm sure he put you through a lot before you got engaged and you put up with it then. It doesn't make it any better but means that it was a bad choice on your part to get engaged. Do what's right and give it back.

If YOU broke off the engagment you need to give it back because it was given with intent of marriage and YOU broke that off. If he were to take you to court over it you would be ordered to return the ring or to pay him for it.
If HE broke off the engagement you can keep it as it was a gift given in anticipation of marriage and since he decided to break it off you are entitled to keep the gift. Either way Do the right thing. HE didn't put you through anything, you CHOSE to be put through what you went through by CHOOSING to remain with him in the beginning.

Give it back, why keep something that symbolizes a union if it fails and he put you through a lot. It will only serve as a reminder of him and he will have a reason to bother you about it down the line.

No, give it back, that will let him know you are so over him. Keeping the ring just gives a single that there is still possibility.

Return it (throw it at him) and show him you are better than he is/was. A ring is a few bucks, your prestige and honor is worth a lot more.
