Well, it will be a big change. I have a couple friends that moved here from Ottawa and they say life is a lot more slow paced then in Ontario.
Victoria is like a reasonably big city with a small town ambiance.
Ladysmith is pretty close to Nanaimo, so you will probably be going there for most of your shopping and going out, as Ladysmith is a pretty small town. Beautiful though, and right on the ocean.
The comax valley is about the same. The higher up the Island you go the smaller and more closed minded the towns get to be. I wouldn't reccomend going any higher then Courtney for living on the Island, especally with a small son, as the schools are pretty rough up there and volience is higher. i'm not tryin to be racist, I'm really not, but the northern towns have a high native population, and unfortunatly in the schools, if you are not native, you tend to get picked on and beaten up regularly.
That will only be a problem if you move really far north.
Crap I'm rambling. things to do:
Go to Chemainus on a day trip and check out the world famous murals. they are incredible.

I have lived in Campbell River for the last 5 years, and lived 5 years in Victoria. I am your age. I love the Island and coastal living. Make sure you explore around everywhere. There is lots to see. Comox Valley is geographically central to the Island but southerners wouldn't let you know it. Ladysmith is central to the main populations, so more convenient for services and shopping. Comox is the fastest growing part of the Island. Probably as the real estate is still slightly cheaper there than say Victoria. It is also the Military base, Military airstrip and search and rescue. Construction is booming there, but construction is strong all over the Island and the Lower Mainland. Tourism is a big Island Industry, so plenty of restaurants and a bonus if you like Seafood.
The summers are nice, winters are mild and wet. People from Ontario tend to have to learn to deal with a damp cold. This winter the whole Island (whole south coast - Vancouver didn't escape it) was hard hit by Rain and Wind Storms this winter. Lots of closed highways, power outages, and fallen trees.
You do learn you are on an Island. Getting on or off it in the Summer gets to be a chore. Ferry line ups and the cost becomes a way of life. Any long weekend and lots of vacationers are headed in both directions, to and from the Island. Again, I suggest that you are better off exploring the Island, like going to Victoria for a long weekend in the Spring, Tofino in the fall and camping in all corners in the summer.
The population is approaching a million, mostly in the South Island and on the East Coast of the Island. It is easy to drive North South, but roads to the west coast are through mountain passes and twist. They ARE worth the trip.

Canada is an excellent position to stay and convey up a kinfolk. we've well being care, an excellent public college equipment pleasant warmth voters ( nicely maximum of them each and every u . s . has it is idiots). The province of Quebec is a touch diverse although in words of the youngsters I advise. they have a daycare software that a lengthy way surpasses some thing the est of the country is doing and from what I actual were informed through some once you pass to school in Quebec you're prepared to attend submit secondary preparation for loose. do not quote me on that although like I stated that is purely from a chum of a chum style element. check out the fellow provinces web pages. you receives extremely some info there. Alberta is booming on the on the spot in words of work. You truly can p.c.. and choose what you opt for to do. I lived in Vancouver for a time myself and hated it. Sorry to any of you who disagree. i actually would not in any respect carry my little ones up there. i'm initially from Nova Scotia and would pass lower back there in a heart beat if the economy turned right into a touch more beneficial strong there. you'll not in any respect come across a more beneficial efficient breed of folk than those from the maritimes. I at present stay in Ontario and experience it purely high-quality. solid success

My favorite place is the City of Victoria - the Oak Bay area.
I would not want to be stuck in the boonies during the winter Rain Storms.
As far as using the ferries is concerned - you can make Reservations.

The island is lovely but it IS island living. You may want to condsider that before choosing to live there. Ferries can be a pain in the butt. The lower mainland has eveything and you could still spend weekends on the island.
