Probably Victorian, is in English. A man with an Arabic name in the Middle Ages is confronted by an angel. The angel asks if he loves God? He answers that he loves his fellow man. The angel accepts this answer as it shows he is a Godly man.

We would like his for our father's funeral on Monday. He loved this poem but recited it only off by heart.

How funny you asked this. I just read this poem two days ago and was struck by its beauty to the point that I marked the page in the book.

Title: Abou Ben Adhem
Author: James Henry Leigh Hunt

Give me about five more minutes and I'll get it typed in for you.

Okay, here we go:

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight of his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold.

Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
'What writest thou?' The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered 'The names of those who love the Lord.'

'And is mine one?' said Abou. 'Nay, not so,'
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still; and said 'I pray thee then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow-men.'

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

My sympathies on the loss of your father. I hope that this helps.
