New Orleans has a great number of attractions for tourists and locals. The area offers a lot more than just food and music.

Family-Friendly Places include:

Audubon Zoo (Be sure to allow plenty of time to visit the entire facility)

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas (You can tour this attraction in less than 2 hours)

Entergy IMAX Theater (Check for show schedules)

Louisiana Children's Museum (Highlights include the huge bubble makers and the throwing cages with radar guns)

Steamboat Natchez (double dip by taking the kids on the Aquarium Zoo Cruise)

Woldenberg Riverfront Park (take a delightful stroll along the River...and be sure to bring your camera)

Museums abound in the New Orleans area. There's got to be at least one that you will like among the following:

National World War II Museum, which was formerly known as the National D-Day Museum

New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park

Ogden Museum of Southern Art (near the WW II Museum)

Louisiana State Museum, which operates five French Quarter properties including the Cabildo, the Presbytere, the 1850 House, the Old U.S. Mint and Madame John's Legacy.

Some Seasonal Attractions include:

Mardi Gras (in February or March)

Jazz & Heritage Festival (the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May)

Essence Music Festival (around the 4th of July)

There are a wide variety of Tours in New Orleans and in the South Louisiana area. Some of them are:

Cemetery Tours (among the cities of the dead, St. Louis Cemetery #1 features the grave of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau)

Ghost Tours (Sidney Smith, who is a great rock and roll photographer, has some spooky tours of haunted New Orleans)

Hurricane Katrina Tours (the largest natural disaster in U.S. history, the Hurricane Katrina damage is astounding)

Plantation Tours (you've seen Oak Alley Plantation in many movies; this is your chance to visit it yourself)

Swamp Tours (air boats and alligators; New Orleans swamp tours allow an up close and personal view of nature)

Riverboat Cruises (choose from a zoo cruise, a two-hour daytime harbor cruise, or the dinner Jazz cruise in the evening)

There are Cultural Attractions as well. You might want to check out some of these:

Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra
New Orleans Ballet Association
New Orleans Museum of Art
New Orleans Opera Association

Gambling aficionados will no doubt find out about places like:

Fair Grounds Race Course (the New Orleans Fair Grounds is second oldest horse race track in America)

Harrah's New Orleans Casino & Hotel (just outside the French Quarter)

Outdoor Activities include:

Hunting (lots of clubs have Louisiana hunting leases, where a Cajun guide will make a Louisiana hunting trip extra special)

Fishing (Louisiana fishing is about as good as it gets; speckled trout and redfish are the main targets)

Golf (you can play golf year round, but be sure to check to see if the course is fully operational in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath)

Despite the blow Hurricane Katrina inflicted on New Orleans, there are many attractions that are up and running...and hoping that you will visit to help keep this great tourist Mecca alive and well.
