Mismo is a boy...well, an IT, really; he's been neutered since before we got him. He's almost 17 months old, and should be fully grown at 24 months. We have NEVER abused him--he's our baby!!--and the people who raised him were good to him (we were second owners). We play with him a good portion every day. I think he licks to show his love, but it's very annoying because you always have to wear a sweater around him. Except for this habit, he is a very well-behaved dog.

To reclarify, specifically for petunia...both my neighbors have dogs. Mine is the youngest, but certainly not the noisiest. As I said, except for the licking,he is very well behaved.

You could try putting something with a bad taste on the spots he licks. Something you know he hates-probably something bitter or sour. Continue to do this and hopefully he will be under the impression that you taste horrible and won't want to lick you. Not sure if it will work but you can give it a try.

You can get various products at the pet store that have bitter tastes that are displeasing to dogs. Many of them are made from bitter apples, and are safe to apply on animals, people, furniture, electric cords, etc. They generally come in pump sprays. You can apply this to yourself and others so that when he licks you he'll get an unpleasant taste in his mouth. You will also want to tell him him no every single time when he licks you. You can also use other unpleasant stimuli such as loud noises like hand clapping.

If that doesn't work, you can buy a collar that will allow you press a button and citronella will spray in his face. They can be expensive, but are handy training aids for all kinds of unwanted behaviors. The big thing to remember is to consistently couple the behavior you don't want him to do with a stimulus that he doesn't like.

I am a vet tech, trainer, & pet hotel owner & I personally love leash training. My dog walked around the house with a leash for the first 2 years of his life. When we come home from work he sits perfect until we give the command to come over, at which point he sits or lays at out feet. This applies to any type of training you want for your pet( sit, stay, heel, etc.). It is such a peaceful quick way of training. Be firm, but no need for yelling or raised voice(if aggitated voice is used your dog will not respond properly. Use a cloth or rope training collar & when your pet does something you disapprove of, give it a tug with a firm command or noise, remember to be firm. Constant licking could be pent up energy or excessive bonding, neither is good. Be sure you walk your dog at least 1/2 hr- 45 minutes everyday. It is crucial that you are consistant with command, even when your pet is being cute. Always be alpha dog.

Maybe you could try rubbing some castor oil on your palms and hands, that way when he licks your arms and hand he wil be disuaded by the bitter taste of the oil. You might have to repeat this a couple of times before he learns his lesson.

I also suggest consulting a vet before trying the above method.

Just grab the tip of his tongue when he starts licking and give a gentle tug and say No! firmly and repeat until it sinks in! OR do as I did for a friends of mine who's dog does this- I made him a sign for his door that says " WARNING! Dog Can't Hold It's LICKER!"Atleast that way people will know what lies ahead when they visit! LOL!?

pups will lick their moms jaws to get nutrition from them. mom dogs (noticeably wild dogs like wolves) will regurgitate what they have eaten and enable the pups lick it out of their mouths. The whining and licking of your face (and others) is a demonstration of submission...because "mom" replaced into boss.
