well, he wasn't neutered, i had him for more than a year, he was a graduation present... i usually let him out because it didn't seem right to lock a cat indoors, since he usually stays home and only goes out to explore and pee/poo.

It depends on the kitty's character. I had a male cat for 15 years and he hadn't ran away not even once. Probably your cat got scared from all the noises and fireworks also meeting a female is a possibility. He will come back. Every cat finds his way back home sooner or later. You should keep him indoors and give him a lot of attention and love. Also when he is in need you should find him a female partner. If he has everything he needs he will never run away again.

Cats can wander, male and females. I had a female cat that just disappeared. You never really know what happened to it. Maybe it was in an accident or got lost. I had one cat dissappear for 3 days then came back.I also got told that some cats if they are sick and going to die, they may run away and not do it close to home. It's terrible because dogs you can keep them behind gates but cats love to travel.

Male cats (also known as Toms) are known to leave home for several days and even weeks at a time if they are not neuter, for they are on the hunt for a queen (female cat) in heat.
Sometimes People will often mistaken a Tom cat in their area to be abandon if seen in their yard more than once, they will either take him in and claimed the cat as their own, or take them to a shelter...
It is a dangerous place out of the house for cats to roam, he could of also been hit by a car...:(

Yup, they do. I've cared quite a few male cats before (stray cats) and they dissappeared upon maturity. Male cats are territorial and they will fight with other cat over a territory which they will mark with their scent (squirting pee). Young inexperience cats tend to be chased away if they start becoming a competition.
I'm guessing that your male cat haven't been neutered (testicles removed). Because if it has, it would have stayed.

Yes, they can.. maybe he found a female in heat or someone else brought him inside to keep him because of the cold. I keep mine indoors though because I'm afraid they'll get hit by cars, which does happen a lot too unfortunately.

All cats can run away if they are not treated right and loved. Keeping your pet inside where it is safe would be the best thing to do. If you gave your pet adequate care and love then the cat did not run away but probably got hit by a car or something that killed it.
