I'm flying into New York and I'mnot sure what i can and cant bring

Check out the airline's web site. They'll give you a general idea and many specifics.

I was surprised to find out on my last trip that I wasn't allowed to carry chap-stick or caramel candy with my carry-on. I had to pack it in my checked baggage.

General rule of thumb: Don't carry-on anything more than clothes, a laptop, a book and a camera, unless you buy it once inside security. Liquids, gels, pastes, check it or leave it at home. If you don't want to check luggage, then buy toothpaste, etc., at your destination.
