Actually, the legal age for tattooing in Illinois was never 18 until January 1, 2006. It had been 21 for many years prior to that and before that time, there were no regulations on age whatsoever.

Tatttooing minors (under 18) is a Class A misdemeanor, not felony, although that is the closest thing to it.

New regulations are forthcoming - July 1st of this year we will see tattoo artist/studio registrations required.

Yes it did, on the first of the year in 2006. Anyone that tattoos a minor under that age can be found guilty of felony child abuse and pay a HUGE fine or face some time in a federal institution. The paperwork that we have our clients fill out is pretty extensive, and I have turned away countless "kids" that come in with fake IDs.

I thought the legal age in the U.S was 18, did they raise it at some point?
