People are afraid of what they don't understand. When you are older you can choose for yourself. There is not much you can do until then unless your Mom is interested in reading about it. Good luck. Oh, and Blessed Be!

The idea of witchcraft has a lot of appeal. It gives you positive spirits and love and hopefully control over your world. Understand this, you are right, there are no rape camps, no one sacrifices babies or any of the weird things people are told. This is a pagan religion and for white witchcraft there are no gods like the God of Christianity. All of life exists in a balance and there are just as many people who want to possess magic in order to control other people and hurt other people. Not all pagans are wonderful (most are, my husband and I are and so are our friends). Your mom is not totally off base, you shouldn't go running off to some party or festival alone.
Studying witchcraft is primarily an exercise in self-discipline and discovery so you don't need any help. You can read about it in books and online and read carefully and decide what YOU think about what they say. There is a movement very similar to white witchcraft called Wicca which may interest you as well. I recommend that, at your age, you start with Silver Ravenwolf. Try the book Teen Witch or the Teen Witch Kit that you can buy at Barnes 'N Nobles. Read it. Then ask your mom to read it. You can try and convince your mother to email me and I will help her help you but she will probably balk. Read everything you can about all religions, you will find that your view of the world and your knowledge of people is changed amazingly.
Please listen to your mom a little, just because someone says that they are good, doesn't make them so. You mom isn't a bad lady, show her that you can take care of yourself by doing your research.

Witchcraft isn't a game, or a toy. It's serious business, and it requires hard work and long study to master. And there's no such things as "white" or "black" witchcraft -- it's a technique, like prayer, with no orientation to benefit or harm. It's what's in the mind of the user that counts.
Witches come from all different religions, or sometimes from no religion at all. Some witches are Wiccans, which is what I am. Our central "commandment" is the Wiccan Rede: "If you harm none, do what you will". We don't force anyone to do anything, and no true Wiccan would do the things your mother is afraid of.
A relatively objective article on what Wiccan witches do and believe:
http://www.religioustolerance.org/witchcra.htm
If you want to get in touch with witches and Wiccans in your area, try the Witches of the World page at Witchvox:
http://www.witchvox.com/xvn.html
But be warned -- if you're under the age of majority, most teachers won't touch you with a 10-foot pole without a letter of consent from your parents.
You might also try the Wiccan forums over at Beliefnet:
http://www.beliefnet.com/boards/boards_main.AllCategories.asp?Category=102
They have Witchcraft and Pagan forums as well, if you go to the main Discussions page.
If you want a good book to read, try "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner", by Scott Cunningham. He's a bit on the light side, but not bad for someone starting out. And whatever you do, stay away from Silver Ravenwolf. Many experienced Wiccans have serious problems with her work and her attitude.
I wish you the best of luck.

You must listen to your mother. If she does not want you to practice witchcraft in her house, do not do it. Wait until you are out of her home.
For now, take the time to read and research. Witchcraft isn't for everyone, and it's not something to take lightly. I recommend the book "Paganism: An Introduction to Earth-Based Religions", both for you and your mother. There's a lot of bad stigma around Witchcraft today, it's not as bad as it once was.
There's really no such thing as "White" witchcraft. Or "Black" witchcraft. Magic doesn't come with a color, it is neither completely good nor completely bad, like you, or me or anyone else on this board, or anything on this earth.
Witchcraft is also too broad of a term. There are Christian Witches, Pagan Witches, Jewish Witches, and so on. There are many gods and spirits, and not all of them are good-focused.
I hope that helped, if you have more questions, feel free to email me.
Edit:
Oh, and just a helpful hint. Be wary of Silver Ravenwolf and her books. There are many, many, MANY better authors out there with a sense of responsibility.

White Witchcraft is not a religion, in fact ,as most witches will attest, there is no such thing as "white" or "black" witchcraft, because magic isn't inherently good OR evil. The other things you mentioned are, of course, pure bullshit. Depending on the tradition, a witch may have 1 god, a god and goddess, many gods and goddesses, or no gods and goddesses at all. Witches do NOT rape, molest, sacrifice, or otherwise harm ANYONE for any reason. But there are indeed, both solitary witches, and witches who practice as part of a coven. That much is true.

I don't think there really is white witchcraft and dark witchcraft. The only difference I can think of is that dark witchcraft would be more centered around night. My advice to you is make sure you understand what witchcraft really is and where it came from. Also, most pagan religions are about balance. You can't have just positive spirits, nature isn't like that and witchcraft is based on/in nature and cycles. So tell your mom what you find out about witchcraft and what it's all about and then maybe she'll change her mind, but she probably won't.

How old are you, dear? I ama witch, and can tell you that the difference between "white" and "black" magick is only the morality of the user. There is no such thing as a "white eithc" except in fairy tales, and mainstream culture seems to think that witchcraft is exactly like it is in the fairy tales. I am a sober, modest woman who doesn't go around wearing all black. I am an educated, rational, and highly spiritual person whom many folks confuse for a Mormon, b/c of my lifestyle. Read more at the library about philosophy, history, nature, and art, for the term "Wicca" literally means "The Wise One". To be a witch means that you have a deeper understanding of the spiritual web that connects all creation together, and that you live life with respect to the forces of nature at work on yourself and those around you..

If it's something that you can practice on your own without ever having to come into contact with another practicioner (which it is), then that proves your mom is obviously wrong about this being an abduction of some kind. Personally, fundamentalist Christians are the only group of people I've seen that sometimes make young followers "go to camps", do manipulative and hurtful things and tell you that "God wants it that way".
Ask yourself what you find more important: exploring what this world has to offer, or conforming to the religious beliefs of your parents? If that means hiding books in your room, so be it.

While the religion has been around for many centuries, you should not consider in experimenting. You must first develop a knowledge of the practice. It is not like on the television shows, and don't let yourself be dragged into something you are not sure of. I am thinking that you are an impressionable teen, perhaps younger adult, who wants to venture out. It is OK to feel out situations and learn from them. Witchcraft can be good or evil dependent upon how it is studied. You must have a feeling in your heart of how you want to proceed in life. It is not a game to be played with. Study, learn and then broach the subject to your mother or family before making a life-altering decision. You must not categorize witchcraft - it is not to be toyed with for learning purposes.

First I have a couple of questions for you to really ponder.
1. Why do you want to practice witchcraft?
2. What lead you to this path?
3. What do you expect to gain from it?
If your answer to ANY of these questions is "power", forget it.
Witchcraft is not something you can just try, it takes years of dedication, study and practice before you can properly do witchcraft. It is not like Christianity where you can just wake up one day and declare you are a witch. I think I studied for about 4 years before I could confidently cast a spell.
We are basically nature lovers. WE all LIVE by our "rede" (our law as it were) and that is "do as you will but harm none" and the law of 3, that means anything you do will come back to you 3 times whether good or bad. It is a 24/7 thing. You can tell this to your mother, even tell her she can contact me if she has any questions, but DO NOT disrespect your parents. If you must wait until you are of age, then just be patient, this religion will always be there for you.
We do not worship God, tho many of us accept that Jesus did exist, but he was simply an extrordinary man. Most revere the Goddess and God, but many of us communicate with a multitude of dieties, but not worship. More like a patrnership.
To my knowledge the only "camps" that I have heard about anyone going to and being forced to have sex were CHRISTIAN!! Branch Davidians and fundamental Mormon. To do anything like that would be way out of line for anyone who claims to practice witchcraft. We DO NOT impose any thing we believe or do on anyone. That would be violating a persons free will and we just don't do that kind of thing.
Witches don't come on colours, white, black or otherwise, it is all subjective. 99.9% use their "Magick" for only good. But as with any religion you will have a few odd balls. Example. Tim McVieigh, the guy who bombed the Murrow buliding in Oklahoma was a Christian, and it is Christians who bomb abortion clinics. And not all Muslims are bad either, most are very peaceful people, but like I said, you are going to have extremists in every culture or religion.
I am Pecti-Witan (aka Hedge Witch, not Wiccan) a "solitary" practitioner of "the Old Religion", and have been for many, many years (over 40). Being a "Witch" is nothing like what is portrayed in movies or on Television. There is nothing flashy about it. we are fairly simple people with "abilities" that everyone has, ours are just honed and utilized. Lots of research and practice. There is a lot to learn when you are dealing with herbal, mineral and candle magick.
I read tarot cards, rune stones and utilize a number of other tools for divination but would NEVER charge anyone for anything I do! Besides, I do not do "readings" or "cast spells" for others on demand. That sounds more like a con game to me!
Now as for what I did to start, well, it seemed to come naturally to me, (my mother was a witch and my great grandmother was the daughter of a Comanche medicine man) and I believe this is not my first life (nor the last) as a witch. I have always had a deep respect for nature and have an innate ability to communicate with animals. When I was very young my parents encouraged me to learn about all religions, so I did. And I encourage you to do the same to find your true path. Books are an excellent source, providing you get the right ones, there are some I would avoid (Ravenwolf). I prefer Scott Cunningham. If you can connect with other practitioners that would also be a good way to learn. One question you must ask yourself is are you looking for the structured system of a Coven or would you prefer the life as a "Solitary"? Buckland has some very good books outlining both. If you are wanting to join a coven you must be 18 or older. But my favorite book is still "Wicca, a Guide for the Solitary Practitoner". It is a good place to start (or affirm).
As you have probably noticed, you also have to have a thick skin, because even in this "advanced" civilization there are still those who believe we worship the devil (LMAO), and would rather turn a blind eye to the world around them. Some will even admit that they think we should be burned at the stake! Ignorance knows no bounds.
Since you are very young and still in school, expect ridicule and really stupid requests to do "Magic" like they do on TV or in movies from your peers. It is not going to make you cool. Expect people to tell you that you are going to Hell. You will probably lose friends. Just being honest with you.
I hope you find the answers you were looking for.

Your mother understands better than you think she does.
Wicca is an ancient religion that practices polytheism - belief in the power of many (sometimes) gods and goddesses (particularly goddesses) - and while they practice "white magic" and "do no harm" ,( in order to protect themselves from evil they have to call upon these forces), and they also deny Jesus and that is dangerous.
By denying Jesus you place your soul in jeopardy and you will go to Hell. Please listen to your mother.
If you had a child and you knew that she was doing something with people that would eventually lead to her spiritual death even though these people made what she wanted to do sound very attractive, would you try to warn her even though you weren't the best example of what not to do ?
That's all your mother is trying to do.
The Bible warns against witchcraft.
"You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord ?" (Acts 13:6-10,NASB)
"Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkeness, carousing, and things like these , of which I forewarn you just I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God".
(Galatians 5:19-21 NASB)
"But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers amd immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters
and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the death (Revelation 21:8 NASB)
