It is best to take with food or after having eaten to lesson the possibility of nausea or gastric problems. The directions do not specifically state that you CAN'T take it on an empty stomach, but typically any medication that can cause stomach upset is best taken with food.

I always took Tramadol (Ultram) after eating a meal or a small snack. And always with an 8oz. glass of water.

Medications usually make me nauseated, regardless of their need to be taken with or without food. So I've played it safe with all medications & had something to eat. Unless it specifically states not to do so, then you're fine.

You do not necessarily have to take it with meals. It can cause nausea and loss of appetite. Eat small frequent meals. I give ultram to several of my elderly patients. I usually give it to them in the evening around bedtime because the risk of sedation and I don't want them to fall. It has been know to cause constipation and dizziness. If either of these side effects become severe then I would let your primary care provider know.

I take 200mg of Ultram extended release - daily. 1 mid morning and the other before bed. These can make you nauseated on a totally empty stomach. I have found that by taking my 2nd pill before bed- I am not needing my sleep meds as often...Hope this helps.
