At age 18, you can buy long guns(rifles & shotguns) legally, and, in REAL America like out West here in Arizona, you don't NEED no stinkin' license!
To buy pistols and obtain a CCW (carry concealed weapon) permit, you must be 21, by Fed. law.

Do you mean a license to own (required in some states) or a permit to carry concealed?
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 21 TO PURCHASE A HANDGUN IN ALL STATES!
It depends on the state and locality you live. Some states are 18 for a long gun, 21 for a handgun. Indiana and Colorado are 18 for either. New Mexico is 19 for handgun, possibly some other states are less than 21 for handgun as well.
The link below will show you the laws for each state, just click on your state to be sure of YOUR laws.

At 18 you may buy a rifle or a shotgun but not handguns, you have to be 21 to get a handgun.
In order to get a CHL - Concealed Handgun License you must be 21 also...At least this is the case in Texas.
However, if you are active duty in the military you are able to get a handgun and a CHL at 18.

An 18 yr. old can't legally OWN a handgun, but they can legally have one in their possession as long as it's registered, and it's not loaded. It CAN NOT be concealed by any means unless you are 21 and have the proper permit.
NC
Military exception
Shotguns and rifles are a different story.
